About 3 Million Students Have No Internet Access In The US, Can Blockchain Help Connectivity?
There are about 3 million students in the US who face struggles keeping up with their studies because they must make do without home internet. In classrooms, access to laptops and the internet is nearly universal. But at home, the cost of internet service and gaps in its availability create obstacles in urban areas and rural communities alike.
School districts, local governments, and others have tried to help solve this problem. Districts installed wireless internet on buses and loaned out hot spots. Many areas organized lists of wi-fi-enabled restaurants and other businesses where children are cherished to stay and do schoolwork. Some students study in the parking lots of schools, libraries or restaurants, wherever they can find a signal.
However, these students consistently score worse than their counterparts who have the internet at home.
Amazon and SpaceX Are Working To Provide Broadband Internet
The space race is on again. Although this time it is to provide broadband satellite internet. The two biggest leaders in this venture are Amazon and SpaceX.
Amazon announced Project Kuiper in April, a planned constellation of 3,236 LEO internet satellites. It is a new initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world. This is a long-term project that envisions serving tens of millions of people who lack basic access to broadband internet.
The LEO internet space is getting increasingly crowded as Amazon joins startup OneWeb and space launch business SpaceX in the same pursuit. They have begun deployment of even larger internet satellite broadband constellations, which could reach 900 satellites and even up to 12,000 when fully complete.
The Internet has become a necessity, like food and housing. Currently, the problem with the internet is that the bandwidth access is too centralized. Decentralized projects are the key to solving this problem and blockchain is at the core of it.
