Agorism and the Bitcoin Network: How Do These Two Concepts Work Together?

Everyone has a different perception of the way that the crypto world should be, and how it benefits them particularly.

Ever since Bitcoin was developed in 2009, there has been some individuals that have used digital currency to engage in counter-economics in a practice also known as Agorism. Essentially, these users see Bitcoin as a way to avoid the harassment that can come from the government, allowing them to escape the bureaucracy that holds them hostage.

Bitcoin is the home for the ideologists that dream of free markets, anarcho-capitalism, and protecting their property rights. These individuals have said that Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies can be used as a tool to go against, the central controllers of fiat currency around the world.

Many Agorists are in favor of crypto assets, because they are able to work around taxation, though they have to be particular in the tokens they use. With the option of using digital currencies in the private way, the users that practice Agorism have a change of stopping the funding of war, corruption, and the oligarchy.

The word “Agorism” comes from the word “agora” in Greek, which means “open markets.” Agorism is a social philosophy based around libertarianism. It encourages the creation of a society that exclusively deals in voluntary exchanges with counter-economics.

The concept is supposed to bring with it a peaceful revolution, as philosopher Samuel Edward Konkin III intended when he proposed it at two conferences in the 1970s – CounterCon I and CounterCon II. That being said, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that so many libertarians have embraced Bitcoin.

At the time that Konkin introduced this idea, he focused on the way that the state is able to lack control of these circumstances. Most Agorists are involved with the black market, averting taxes, rejecting the concept of licensing, working full businesses under the table, and doing anything they can to prevent the power of a corrupt government over them.

Naturally, money plays a big role, and most Agorists choose to settle their financial matters through deals in cash, bartering and trading, or with cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin appeals to them for the lack of central authority, and the fact that it is free from the state.

Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym for the unknown creator of Bitcoin, has commented a few times on how Bitcoin will not become the “ultimate solution to political problems. By November 2008, the creator added that the implementation of Bitcoin could essentially create a “new territory of freedom for several years.”

Two years later in February 2010, Satoshi went on to recommend the use of Tor, if the user needed to enhance their privacy safely. At the time, Bitcoin was incredibly new as a technology, which it still is, but he said that it had not been “independently analyzed” yet.

As an article from state, cryptocurrencies can be applied in a way that removes the state from consensual trades involving individuals.

Agorists are under the belief that vices are not crimes, and that the drug war is nothing more than a crime against peaceful people. Dread Pirate Roberts (DPR), the founder of the Silk Road, had expressed that he supports the anti-authoritarian stance associated with Agorism. The transactions that manage to occur outside of the control of the state are, to DPR, a “victory” for the parties involved.

Considering these facts, there is plenty of consumers that believe that the anti-state activity that is linked with Bitcoin, including Wikileaks and the Silk Road, were part of the fuel of the digital currency’s real-world value at the beginning.

Furthermore, the cryptocurrency ecosystem is still largely involved with darknet markets and other gray and black activities. While there are some supporters of the crypto movement that want to see regulations and classifications by the government, Agorists continue to participate in crypto activities that would be considered “bad mannered.”

As cryptocurrency continues to evolve with anti-war and anti-state movements, the proponents of a free market society will most likely continue to involve themselves with the technology.
