Akoin: Akon’s New Cryptocurrency Coin & Akon Crypto City Launches at Cannes Lions
Akon’s Next Endeavor, Akoin the Crypto to Strengthen African Economy
Rapper/Singer, Akon has recently announced the soon-approaching launch of his cryptocurrency, Akoin, which he believes will help the African economy progress over time. His most popular effort, Akon Lighting Africa was globally noticed, as the rapper joined forces with Thione Niang, Co-Founder, to reverse their childhood memories filled with the lack of electricity, to a country that will have access to light through solar panels.
Akon seems to hold a strong stance on blockchain and crypto as he believes them to “be the savior for Africa”. He shared with a panel that:
“it brings the power back to the people and brings the security back into the currency system and also allows people to utilize it in ways where they can advance themselves and not allow government to do those things that are keeping them down.”
According to a site notice made, a board titled, “Akon Crypto City”, has been placed built on 2,000 acres of land, which the president of Senegal gifted to the rapper. This attempt will definitely be the first of its kind in Senegal where the focus is a “100% crypto-based city with Akoin at the center of transactional life.”
When asked deep questions related to the specs of the project, Akon simply replied:
“I come with the concepts and let the geeks figure it out.”

Potential Candidate for 2020 Presidency?
Akon has previously stated that he will be running for president in 2020, not necessarily considering Trump as the only competition, but most probably Kanye West also, as he shared, “I actually really want Kanye to run.”
As for his debate, he said that he had it all figured out and how the final outcome will be all about himself. In particular, he said,
“It’s going to be entertaining […] I’m going to go after Trump and Kanye will get offended because he likes Trump and he’s going to go after me […] I’m going to go after Kanye and then Trump’s going to get offended because he likes Kanye and he’s going to go after me. And the debate stage will be set where it’s all about me. It’s perfect, a masterplan.”
He believes that being able to get onto such a platform will allow him to “get the movement going, I get the conversation going,” which is a noteworthy and rare perspective to hold with respect to politics nowadays.
