Android Bitcoin Core (ABCore)’s Alpha Proof of Concept Releases to Help Power Full Nodes on Phone

Android-Powered Bitcoin Full Nodes Could Soon Reach the Crypto Market

On October 2, an Alpha Proof of Concept v0.68 for the Android Bitcoin Core (ABCore) was pre-released. The project aims to expand Bitcoin full-nodes to Android mobile-phone users interested in it.

The ABCore is an application specifically designed for Android phones that has been created to operate as a personal node. This would allow users to operate as a personal node or an ‘on-the-go’ node. It will be connecting to remote servers through a mobile wallet.

The new full node software is known as Knots and it gets real-time data from particular node addresses. Not only smartphones are supported, but all android devices can work as nodes in the network, including smart televisions.

Users that have the Android versions ‘Lollipop’ and onwards are able to use the ABCore. Since 2016, the application is in alpha mode and the development team has been led by Larry Nahum, founder of the crypto wallet company known as Green address.

Those interested users can download the ABCore from the official GitHub place. At the same time, it is possible to download a apkfile on FDroid. So as to operate the app needs over 2 GB of RAM and a free disk space of 256 GB. This would allow the node to seamlessly operate.

The application will be connected to the Bitcoin network and it will be communicating with it as a normal full node. Developers of the ABCore suggest not to use the Android client as a fully-functional wallet. They indeed advise to use it as a personal blockchain anchor.

With the ABCore running in the ‘blocks-only’ mode would be providing full security but less bandwidth and storage footprint. This ABCore is able to verify transactions as well as validating block headers. It works in a very easy way since it trusts full node peers and the information provided by them.

This possibility is very positive for the crypto community. Users will not have to think about using a computer at all times to support a Bitcoin full node. Additionally, those interested users will be saving money since they will not have to pay for expensive electricity bills. Everything is performed by the Android device.

The ABCore can be used in old electronic devices, old phones and tables and can be run at home. By investing in a good battery and a 128GB memory card, Bitcoin and crypto Enthusiasts will be able to support a decentralized network, no matter where they are.
