AsicVault

AsicVault, found online at AsicVault.io, claims to be “the first physically secure cryptocurrency vault.” Find out what that means today in our review.

What Is AsicVault?

AsicVault is an Estonian company that claims to be the first physically secure bitcoin hardware wallet.

Obviously, there are existing hardware wallets that claim to offer security. So what makes AsicVault different?

AsicVault uses several layers of encryption to replace an ordinary hardware wallet. The end result is a cryptocurrency storage system that’s 1000 times stronger and 1000 times more expensive to crack than a traditional cold storage wallet.

AsicVault is a small device with an AMOLED display. You twist a dial on that display to unlock your device. The display is about 2.2 inches, or 5.6cm across.

If you want to put an extra layer of protection between your cryptocurrencies and the outside world, then AsicVault is one such way to do that.

Right now, AsicVault appears to be in the prototype phase. The website has limited photos of the device, and it’s not yet available for sale. However, you can register for a chance to buy AsicVault when it’s first released.

How Does AsicVault Work?

Essentially, AsicVault works by providing full disk encryption of hard disks on your PC or notebook. All encryption functions are performed within the AsicVault device. Keys are never exposed to the outside world, which is why AsicVault claims to be safer than TrueCrypt/VeraCrypt, among other crypto storage solutions.

Meanwhile, users unlock the device using a touchscreen interface. That touchscreen interface displays data at 60fps across a full color AMOLED display. You enter your PIN into that display to “unlock your device like a real vault.” You enter your PIN like you would unlock a bank safe – by twisting a dial.

AsicVault is based on a custom-built AsicVault chip. It incorporates a number of powerful “hardware crypto accelerators”. These crypto accelerators work constantly to eliminate side channel attacks.

In just a few seconds, the AsicVault chip can perform over 2 million iterations of PBKDF2 SHA-512. This makes it 1,000 times more expensive to crack the private keys stored inside the vault, and 1,000 times more difficult.

Here are some of the key ways in which AsicVault works to protect your keys:

  • Crypto accelerators are used to provide 1,000 times stronger security than traditional hardware wallets
  • Seed word paper backups generated by AsicVault inherit the same security benefits
  • AsicVault leverages active and passive anti-tamper technologies, making it a physically secure solution
  • The open hardware platform has two isolated RISC-V processors
  • Capable of storing multiple types of currencies, including ERC20 tokens
  • Password manager helps your funds stay protected without you getting locked out
  • AsicVault apps are available for easier management solutions
  • There’s a 16M full color AMOLED touchscreen display

Those “active and passive” anti-tamper technologies include intrusion detection systems. Nobody can tamper with the device with it being obvious. Some of the anti-tamper functions include low power integrated circuits, instant self-destruct modes, and an energy supply based on a supercapacitor (there are no batteries). The device also continuously monitors voltage, light, proximity, and magnetic field for any abnormalities, while an 8-layer active mesh surrounds all electronic components at 65 GHz precision.

Surrounding all of this high-tech equipment is a physically secure enclosure. The enclosure is made from full aluminum, while the display using Corning Gorilla Glass 5. AsicVault is water resistant to two meters.

The device also has higher performance than most SSD disks: 400MB/s speeds. There’s a USB Type-C port.

In terms of compatibility, AsicVault works with Windows (7+), Mac (10.9+), and Linux or Chrome.

Overall, these tamper-proof technologies and encryption systems help AsicVault reach FIPS 140-2 Level 4 security requirements, which is the highest level for that particular cryptographic security standard. The company claims security like this is crucially missing from today’s cold storage systems, which is why they see an opportunity with AsicVault.

Who’s Behind AsicVault?

AsicVault is made by a Tallinn, Estonia-based company named AsicVault Ltd. Estonian corporation registration files tell us the company was registered in November 2016.

Although the company was formed in 2016, there’s limited information about AsicVault available online – so apparently, the website just came online recently.

AsicVault Conclusion

AsicVault is a unique cryptocurrency storage system based on a custom-built chip and some high-tech technology. The device safeguards your cryptocurrency behind ultra-secure encryption. It also has nifty features like an internal supercapacitor that powers the device – so it doesn’t need to run on battery life. Active intrusion detection – including electronic intrusion detection – prevents tampering.

Ultimately, if you want an extra layer of security between your cryptocurrency funds and the outside world, then AsicVault may be the right choice for you. It claims to be 1,000 times more difficult to attack than cold storage systems and other solutions.
