Associated Press (AP Stylebook) Handbook Provides Clarity on Crypto vs Cryptocurrency Classifications

Quick Facts:

  • Associated Press released announcement on Twitter to explain proper grammar for writing about cryptocurrency.
  • Cryptocurrency assets should be capitalized, if not referring to a payment.

As the regulators around the world work to regulate and govern Bitcoin, there are many jurisdictions that are trying to start the process by determining the definition of many terms used in cryptocurrency. In doing so, there have been media websites like Bloomberg, Reuters, CNBC, and others that have formed full discussion panels on the topic. The latest one to get involved is the Associated Pres Stylebook and Briefing Media Law, better know as AP Stylebook.

AP Stylebook is a guide that reporters use to help them understand various rules regarding grammar style and usage. Posting to Twitter, the guide stated that the new entry that they would be including about cryptocurrency would end up including Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, and Ethereum. Considering how widespread the use of this guide is, it is likely that the whole industry could soon be seen in a different light.

The post also indicates that the term “cryptocurrency” should be used in its entirety, rather than just saying crypto, as it could confuse users with cryptography.

The entry included some details to teach writers about the right ways to use these terms in articles and other types of writing. Some of the rules included that Bitcoin and other currencies should be capitalized if they are referring to a system, but not in reference to payment.

Max Koopsen, a copy editor for Cointelegraph, posted multiple questions about the rules, asking why he would need to use the term “ethereums” instead of “ethers,” adding that ether is the name of the currency. He tagged Vitalik Buterin to ask him to “clear it up.”

Vitalik Buterin replied to the question, explaining that he preferred the term to be “ether” for the payment use of Ethereum.
