Bitcoin Ransom Is Focal Point For African Kidnapping As 5 BTC Demanded To Release 9 Year Old Girl

Kidnapers Demand Bitcoin To Release Kid In Africa

According to a recent report released by Bitcoinafrica, kidnapers demanded five Bitcoin to release a girl that was kidnapped. The message was sent by the kidnappers to the anti-crime website Western Cape Gangwatch. At the time of writing, 5 Bitcoin (BTC) is equal to $20,000.

The message that was written by the kidnappers says that they have 48 hours to send the funds. If in 48 hours they do not receive $19,000 then the communication will cease.

The criminals wrote:

“You have 48 hours should you not transfer the Bitcoin in 48 hours we will cease communication. This email is going to be deleted in 12 hours.”

The kidnapped girl seems to be a nine-year-old called Linathi Titshala and was seen for the last time back on December 16, 2018, when she was close to her grandmother's house. On December 14, she celebrated her birthday and had also been living with her grandmother.

The group fighting criminals have been working with law enforcement agencies after receiving this shocking email. Although they’ve tried to track the email, they were not able to do so. A spokesperson of Western Cape Gangwatch commented that they have also bee trying to track the criminals using the Bitcoin code but were not able. They believe that the email was created an internet café that deletes the information about the people using the devices.

At the same time, the Western Cape Gangwatch informed that they have also contacted the Missing Persons Unit. They are currently working on this issue and trying to trace and find the kid.

This is not the first time that a kid is kidnapped and captors ask for a ransom in Bitcoin. Back in 2018, a South African kid, Katlego Marite, was kidnapped by criminals. The kidnappers were asking for 15 Bitcoin to release the kid. At that time, 15 Bitcoin was worth close to $140,000.

Fortunately, this kid was found in good conditions and unharmed. Now, he is back with his family.

Bitcoin is one of the preferred methods for criminals to steal funds since it is more difficult to discover who is behind each of the BTC addresses. Nevertheless, payments can be tracked and eventually discover the criminals.
