Blockchain For Waste Management: How Is DLT Helping Clean Up Excess Trash?

We, humans, are building big mountains of trash. Every single day. And the situation is not becoming better, indeed, it is worsening day after day. According to the World Bank Group, the waste generation will be reaching 2.2 billion metric tons of rubbish in 2025.

Landfills with trash are becoming more dangerous every single day. Indeed, they leak poisonous materials into the ground, contaminating the water nearby. This water source is later used for animals or humans. This is clearly not healthy.

However, blockchain technology is helping to change that. Companies related to waste management are starting to use distributed ledger technology (DLT) to improve the current situation. Embracing DLT, companies could reduce millions of dollars and take care of the environment.

What To Do With The Plastic Waste?

According to some studies, 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic have been produced since the middle of the last century. The main problem is that 60% of these metric tones ended up in landfills across the world. This is not sustainable for the future.

The Plastic Bank, a blockchain-related recycling company, has challenged the current system. The intention is to incentivize the collection of used plastic. Those who do it, can receive fiat money or services such as cellular airtime or a virtual currency.

This company was able to sign a partnership with IBM so as to develop the technology needed to create a global and scalable recycling solution.

Electronic Waste

The International Telecommunications Union has estimated that €55 billion have been lost because of electronic waste. Indeed, gold is the biggest contributor of this value, an important component used to build electronic devices.

Some products created in the market do not have a long life expectancy. Due to the fact that technology improves really fast, most of the devices created end up in landfills.

At the moment, there is no important blockchain project trying to enter this market.

Is There Any Solution For these Problems?

At the moment, countries centralize the trash produced in landfills. That means that there is a concentration of waste in many different areas across the globe. The waste concentrated in these landfills produces a product known as methane, which is very harmful for the environment. Even more than carbon dioxide.

If the waste is distributed among communities and individuals, things would decompose faster and would help gardening projects have fertilizer.

One of the solutions to the issue of what to do with the trash is related to waste delivery. Due to the fact that we produce huge amounts of rubbish, blockchain projects could decentralize the waste from concentrated areas and change the current system.

The world needs blockchain projects that would tackle the issue of how to deal with trash and waste produced by the society. If our habits do not change, the situation would be even more complicated for the future, and the solutions would help with this issue.
