Brave – Web Browser Software For Better Ad Blocking & Tracking?

Brave is a browser that automatically blocks ads and trackers to give you a faster, safer browsing experience. Here’s our Brave browser review.

    What Is Brave?

Brave is a web browser that blocks trackers and intrusive advertisements. The browser does this for two main reasons: security and speed. By blocking intrusive website code, Brave gives you a faster, safer browsing experience. Your pages load more quickly and you avoid third party tracking and malvertisements.

As the Brave official website explains, “It’s amazing how fast a page loads when you strip away everything but the real content”. The developers claim that up to 60% of page load time is caused by the underlying ad technology that loads every time you hit a new page. 20% of load times involve loading things like trackers and cookies.

To prove it’s faster than ordinary web browsers, Brave posts speed videos on its official website.

Today, Brave is available for iOS, Android, OS X, Windows, and Linux.

To be clear, the goal of Brave isn’t to block all advertisements. The browser fully understands that content creators rely on advertising revenue to continue publishing content. With that in mind, Brave only wants to block malicious advertisements and intrusive trackers.

    Brave Features

Brave’s developers have a specific goal: “to block everything on the web that can cramp your style and compromise your privacy”. Here are some of the key features of the web browser:

    Blocks Harmful Advertising:

Malvertising, or malicious advertising, is a rampant problem across the internet. Some ads even install malware on your computer without your knowledge or permission. Brave blocks harmful advertising.

    Redirects Sites To HTTPS:

When you’re using HTTPS, your browsing activity is encrypted. HTTPS is crucial whether you’re on your social media account or bank account. Today, most major websites offer HTTPS. However, not all websites force users to use HTTPS by default. Brave uses HTTPS Everywhere, a popular Chrome plugin, to make sure your data is secured at all times.

    Blocks Tracking Pixels & Cookies:

Websites use tracking pixels and tracking cookies to learn more about you. You know how you’ll visit a website one day, then see ads for that website on your Facebook for weeks afterward? Brave prevents this from happening. Brave also prevents websites from loading tracking pixels, which track everywhere you click on a particular website.

    Open Source:

Brave is open source and available on Github. They encourage the community to contribute “as we build the web of the future”.

    Multi Platform:

Brave is available on iOS, Android, Windows, Linux, and OS X.

Why doesn’t Brave just block all ads? Brave describes all-encompassing ad blocking as “a race to the bottom where nobody wins”. The internet is built on a system where content creators are rewarded with ad revenue, and they use that revenue to continue publishing content.

Brave just blocks malicious advertisements – so content creators can still make money, while users can browse more safely and securely.

    About Brave

Brave is developed by Brave Software Inc. That company is located at the following address in San Francisco:

    1161 Mission Street, #401
    San Francisco, CA 94103-1550

You can contact the company by email at [email protected]

The company’s “About” page describes its mission as “to save the web by increasing browsing speed and safety for users, while growing ad revenue share for content creators”.

In the future, Brave plans to transform the online advertising ecosystem entirely using micropayments and a new revenue-sharing solution for both users and publishers. The goal is to create a brighter future for the open web.

Brave is led by Brendan Eich (Founder, President, and CEO) and Brian Bondy (Founder and Lead Developer).

In addition to making a web browser, Brave has a charity organization called the Brave Youth Program, which acts as a stepping stone for college students to get introduced to the open source community while gaining practical knowledge from Brave’s developers.

You can learn more about the Brave Youth Program on their site as well.
