Brussels Airport Launches Blockchain Application To Digitize Transactions
Brussels Airport announced the launch of its first application using blockchain technology, strengthening their frontrunner position in digital innovation in the air cargo industry.
The app will work in conjunction with existing apps such as the Slot Booking App, as well as apps that are yet to be developed. It is part of Brussels Airport’s strategic objective of fully digitalizing the logistics flow with the support of applications offered via the BRUcloud open data sharing platform, the focus now is to make the import process paperless, more efficient and transparent.
Head of Brussels Airport Cargo, Steven Polmans, said:
“The handover of cargo is an important phase, as it also confers the legal transfer and liability for the cargo. Today it is a very time-consuming and manual process, involving paperwork and different steps. So this is a good example of where blockchain can offer a solution.”
New technologies can be difficult to implement, held back by money or mindset. But Mr. Polmans said developing the proof of concept and drafting the scope took just two months. Programming has now begun, with the first pilot set to be introduced in August and the app to be rolled out in October.
More applications can be added on to the existing infrastructure using the same technology. Different users can install their own nodes, which can register all transactions and are accessible by all parties with access rights, creating complete transparency.
The focus of the next phase is on making the import process paperless, more efficient and transparent. It fully contributes to the Brussels Airport strategic objective to have a digitalised logistical flow in place supported by a combination of applications offered via the BRUcloud platform.
During the Air China Cargo exhibition in Shanghai last month, Brussels Airport and their cargo community won the award for ‘IT solution of the year’ with BRUcloud. BRUcloud is an open data sharing platform based on Nallian’s data technology on which different applications can be built.
