What Is Titanium CryptoCurrency Seed Storage?

An Arizona entrepreneur recently launched a titanium-based seed storage system on Kickstarter. That system is called ColdTi. Essentially, it uses physical titanium to protect your recovery seeds.

No, this isn’t a seed storage system for agricultural purposes. It stores your master seeds so you can access your cryptocurrency. Your seeds are stored “in indestructible titanium to prevent the loss of crypto funds for generations”, explains the official website.

Your cryptocurrency seeds are the recovery phrases used to access your funds if you lose access to your digital or hardware wallet. Many people write down 12 words on a piece of paper as a “backup” for their cryptocurrency funds.

However, paper is susceptible to fire and other physical damage. Titanium is virtually indestructible – and that’s where the makers of ColdTi see an opportunity.

You engrave your seed on the storage system, then allow your cryptocurrency funds to last for generations. Your recovery phrase is securely stored within a virtually indestructible credit card-sized device.

As of August 17, the project is two days into its fundraising campaign. The Mesa, Arizona-based company is seeking to raise $20,000 before September 15.

How Titanium CryptoCurrency Seed Storage Works

The manufacturer has already created a prototype version of ColdTi. The device is intentionally designed to look boring. It features a nondescript, unbranded titanium exterior. The device holds recovery seeds inside this titanium case to prevent the loss of your crypto funds forever.

ColdTi solves crucial problems in the world of recovery seeds. Any digital backup of your recovery seed or private key is susceptible to attack, which is why many people write down their seed in the real world, then keep that seed away from prying eyes.

Unfortunately, many people today treat their recovery seed like they would treat a receipt from a store. They rely on ink and paper to protect the most important password in their lives. Leaving your seed on a flimsy piece of paper is a risk most investors shouldn’t take.

That’s where ColdTi wants to help. ColdTi promises to protect and preserve any recovery seed “for generations”. Titanium, which has a melting point over 3000 degrees Fahrenheit, isn’t susceptible to fire, flood, or even time. Titanium will even create its own oxide film layer to prevent corrosion.

For an additional layer of security, your ColdTi unit also ships with a nondescript, fire and tamper-resistant enclosure to add another level of security to your platform.

After you receive your ColdTi, you engrave your seed using an included punch set. Obviously, ColdTi doesn't want to engrave the device for you – otherwise, your key could be compromised. That’s why they’ve included a simple punch set with their kit. You use the kit, take a hammer, then engrave your seed into the Titanium foundation. The process is so easy anyone can do it.

Technically speaking, ColdTi works in tandem with the BIP39 word list, which consists of 2048 words. Each word corresponds to a unique number. With ColdTi, you engrave the number instead of the words. That means ColdTi is language agnostic. It also means that the platform can ship with only 9 different punches (one for each number).

In layman’s terms, ColdTi lets you write down 12 numbers on a titanium plate, then hold that plate for generations. You punch the numbers into the plate using 10 different punches (numbers 0 through 9).

The titanium plate is held together with tamper-resistant screws. It’s all held inside a fire-resistant aluminum enclosure (the enclosure is fire-resistant, but the titanium itself is effectively fireproof). There are 24 fields in total, so you can store two seeds with each kit.

ColdTi is about the size of a credit card. As mentioned above, the device is nondescript and contains no logos or markings that might lead to unwanted detection.

Who Makes ColdTi?

ColdTi is manufactured in America by a Mesa, Arizona-based company. That company, and the Kickstarter project, appear to be led by a man named Dennis Vegh.

Previously, Vegh has been linked to projects like PhotoShipOne.com (a point to point cable cam system) and Aerial Sphere LLC (an immersive 360 degree aerial mapping system for urban environments).

Cold ($49)
