Controversial Crypto Guru John McAfee is Willing to Support Cuba’s Cryptocurrency Creation
Days after revealing that it was considering adopting crypto to boost its finances and beat the US-imposed trade embargo, the Cuban government seems to have found an unlikely. John McAfee, a fugitive tech and cybersecurity guru and entrepreneur, tweeted his support for the initiative, saying he would be willing to help develop it.
Six days ago, the country’s Communist government announced on a state-run TV that it was mulling over the idea of opting to digital assets to boost incomes. During the announcement, the country’s President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, said that the cryptocurrency plan had been seen as a way through which the country could increase national production and demand.
McAfee, reacting to this, aired his opinion on Twitter, praising the project. According to him, cryptocurrencies in Cuba will be viable and simple to initiate. He even offered to offer his expert guidance free of charge.
On Twitter, McAfee said that digital currency is the only clever alternatives that can help Cuba evade the US government. According to him, no trivial system of currency could beat the US government’s embargo.
The idea of using crypto to evade sanctions imposed by the American government on Cuba, 63 years ago, seems to have been inspired by the nation’s ally, Venezuela. The country’s “petro” cryptocurrency was launched over a year ago, even though it never achieved much.
Petro’s failure, according to the exiled developer of eponymous antivirus software in the 1980s, is because of a series of compounded false expectations. He said that no coin is expected to be launched and perform well straightaway.
He, however, offered a word of advice to the country’s communist government. He urged them to adopt the coin to its full reality as a country, saying that for the coin to be a success, the government will have to develop it on a proper Blockchain. Additionally, McAfee hopes that the digital asset is structured to meet the country’s needs and economic situation.
Reciprocating the Host Country’s Homely Welcome
Despite his controversial past, John McAfee has always remained vocal in promoting his ideas of freedom. And it is probably the same ideals that are now urging him to help the Cuban government create its own cryptocurrency.
It hasn’t been confirmed yet if the government will accept the Havana-based tech entrepreneur on board, even though he has repeatedly applied for the role.
The programmer is meanwhile planning to run for the presidency in the US 2020 elections under the Libertarian Party. He plans to extend his Cuban tourist visa indefinitely, a move which will automatically break the recently imposed ban on recreational vessels visiting the Island country by the US. He will be banking on his over a million Twitter followers to clinch the seat.
