Crypto Analyst Describes Craig Wright as the “Antithesis of Satoshi Nakamoto”

Crypto analyst dark pill (@DanDarkPill) set off controversy on Twitter earlier today when he called Craig Wright “the antithesis of Satoshi Nakamoto”. Dark pill was referencing a years-old statement from Satoshi discussing libertarianism.

In 2015, online publications identified Australian Craig Wright as the likely person behind the Satoshi Nakamoto identity. In 2016, Wright confirmed that he was Satoshi, but later retracted the claim after failing to provide adequate proof. Controversy continues to rage in the crypto community over who Satoshi Nakamoto is.

It’s certainly possible that Craig Wright is Satoshi Nakamoto. It’s also possible that Dave Kleiman, Nick Szabo, Hal Finney, or one of the dozens of other proposed names is Satoshi.

Clearly, dark pill is not a fan of the “Craig Wright is Satoshi” story.

Earlier today, dark pill tweeted:

The tweet linked to a screenshot of a statement from Satoshi. Here’s what Satoshi wrote:

“It’s very attractive to the libertarian viewpoint if we can explain it properly. I’m better with code than with words though.”

The Satoshi quote has been repeated on the internet thousands of times over the years. A quick Google search shows the quote popping up on Reddit, Twitter, and other online platforms.

The original Satoshi quote comes from an email on November 14, 2008, just two weeks after the bitcoin whitepaper was first published online [did Phil Wilson help, Craig Wright says No].

The email was addressing some of the responses to the “Bitcoin P2P e-cash paper”, including responses from Hal Finney to Satoshi. You can view the full email here.

Satoshi was responding to the following statement from Hal Finney:

“The bitcoin system turns out to be socially useful and valuable, so that node operators feel that they are making a beneficial contribution to the world by their efforts (similar to the various “@Home” compute projects where people volunteer their compute resources for good causes). In this case it seems to me that simple altruism can suffice to keep the network running properly.”

Finney is arguing that simple altruism can keep the network running. People will want to contribute because they’re doing social good – similar to the reason people contribute to SETI and similar mass computing projects.

In response, Satoshi said his now famous line we referenced above.

Craig Wright Is Better With Words Than Code

Why does dark pill feel that Craig Wright is the “antithesis” of Satoshi Nakamoto?

The answer is obvious: in the statement above, Satoshi admits he is better at coding than explaining his thoughts.

In real life, we’ve seen Craig Wright work the opposite way: Craig Wright is great with words, but his coding ability has repeatedly come into question. He struggles to perform basic coding operations, but he can eloquently explain the merits of bitcoin pertaining to libertarianism.

Ultimately, the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto continues to be unknown, and the controversy over Craig Wright continues to rage on.
