Crypto Exchange Bittrex Files a Claim of Infringement Regarding its Domain Name
The cryptocurrency exchange Bittrex has filed a claim of infringement against Amanda Lomendres Lopes. Lopes registered the www.bittrex-es.com website that was accused of conducting a phishing scheme.
Bittrex owns the website www.bittrex.com and the company claimed that the site registered by Lopes was very similar to their name. This was creating confusion among the cryptocurrency community. According to a report released by The Block, when there are 2-3 different characters between sites, these domains qualify as “similar.”
As per the report, the domain at issue was used for a phishing scheme that was informed by Ethereum Scam Database and the IRIS security platform. The registrant did not have the rights and interest in the domain at issue.
The article released by The Block reads as follows:
“Registrant had knowledge of Bittrex’s trademark, as Registrant intended to confuse web browsers into assuming www.bittrex-es.com it was a legitimate Bittrex web site as the basis for its phishing scheme.”
The arbitrator ordered the domain to be transferred to Bittrex, which is now going to be controlling the domain.
Bittrex is one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the market. According to CoinMarketCap, Bittrex is the 51st largest platform in the market with a trading volume of $60 million in the last 24 hours.
