Crypto Doubleheader Hearings Take Center Stage on Capitol Hill: How to Tune in & Watch?

Congressman Brad Sherman, the US representative who wants to ban all cryptocurrencies, is holding a telephone town hall meeting on August 7th between 7pm and 8:30pm.

Sherman has attracted criticism from across the cryptocurrency community for suggesting that all cryptocurrencies be banned. It’s unclear which topics will be discussed at this latest town hall. However, as you may expect, a number of cryptocurrency users from Sherman’s district are already planning to attend the event.

Brad Sherman is up for re-election in November 2018 in California District 30. He has represented District 30 since the 1990s.

The town hall announcement was first spotted by the team over at TrustNodes.com.

TrustNodes.com, in their writeup on the town hall, didn’t pull any punches when describing Sherman:

“Described as a rank and file Democrat, he votes almost 100% with his party, potentially suggesting he has no strong beliefs or convictions,”

explained TrustNodes.

“A career politician, he appears keen to shout whatever the political buzzword of the day happens to be, but outside of the cameras there is a very different story,”

the article goes on to explain.

The article goes on to reference a local California newspaper story that described Sherman’s offices as having “an atmosphere of bullying and sexual harassment.” Staffers were reportedly “screamed out” frequently, according to one former staffer, “and it was not just about work performance…but about things that were far beyond the scope of their jobs.”

“The environment in Sherman’s D.C. and California offices was so toxic, it was laughable to think junior staff would have felt comfortable raising concerns about harassment – or anything else.”

Despite the critical press, Sherman won the primary in his district this June, winning 62.30% of the vote compared to Republican challenger Mark Reed, who won 27.28% of the vote (the remaining votes were split among two other Democratic candidates).

Sherman reportedly won through “electoral cheating through redistricting”. In any case, this was just a primary for the mid-term election, so it didn’t attract much attention. As Sherman gathers criticism for his anti-crypto stance, however, things may continue to change.

Several members of the cryptocurrency community who live in Sherman’s district have already announced plans to attend the telephone town hall meeting on August 7.

“I never had a reason to work against Mr. Sherman. Now I do,” said one voter from his district on Reddit.

“I actually didn’t mind him much, but hearing about this all is extremely frustrating,” echoed another.

Those two comments, meanwhile, were on an /r/cryptocurrency post highlighting the fact that Brad Sherman’s biggest campaign donor was fined $13.3 million for illegal gambling. The story was revealed online by @TheCryptoDog, which later received a direct message from Sherman telling him to stop spreading the story across the internet.

The story would later receive over 4800 upvotes on Reddit – so clearly, Sherman’s plan backfired.

@TheCryptoDog posted the original story as evidence that it doesn’t take cryptocurrency to conduct illegal transactions, and that many of those seeking to ban cryptocurrency don’t have clean records themselves.

“@BradSherman was so concerned about $crypto users using #cryptocurrency for deceptive and illegal financial activity, yet his top campaign donation came from a company that had to forfeit $13.3 million to the US government for facilitating illegal gambling,”

explained @TheCryptoDog, citing an offshore gambling settlement between Allied Wallet, an e-commerce merchant service, and the US government.

In any case, Brad Sherman is painting himself as an enemy of the entire cryptocurrency space by advocating for the complete ban of cryptocurrencies. His telephone town hall is scheduled to take place on August 7 from 7pm to 830pm. You can RSVP to the event on the official Rep. Brad Sherman website.
