Crypto Scam, Bitcoin Code, Sued By Hollywood Superstar Kate Winslet For False Representation

The popular Hollywood actor, Kate Winslet, known widely for her role on Titanic, is suing an online crypto scam that used her image and created fabricated quotes to promote their business. The Bitcoin based scam company, Bitcoin Code, used fabricated quotes poised as a BBC interview on the movie star’s wealth creation options. The scam moves users to invest around £300 GBP with a promise of making huge returns

“just like Kate did.”

The fabricated story claims to have a recorded News at Ten segment on BBC whereby Kate promotes their scam token. The website states Kate discovered a new way to build on to her £36 million empire by investing in the token. The false Kate quote reads:

“What’s made me successful is jumping into new opportunities quickly – without any hesitation. Right now my No1 money-maker is a new cryptocurrency auto-trading program called Bitcoin Code. It won’t be around forever, so don’t miss out.”

Kate Winslet Issues Legal Action against the Scammers

One of the movie star’s spokesperson issued a statement to the Mirror UK, stating legal action to be taken by the team to bring the scammers to book. The statement reads,

“This misleading promotion is completely disingenuous and categorically false. We are dealing with this through the appropriate channels.”

A Keen Look at A list Celebrity Cryptocurrency Promotions

This, however, is not the first time a celebrity’s face and name is being used by cryptocurrency scammers. Earlier in March this year, UK’s authority on action fraud released a report showing over 1,200 investors lost over $19 million to Bitcoin scams using celebrity presence and fake quotes to build their marketing stance.

Martin Lewis, a celebrity who won a case against Facebook in 2018, echoed the need for proper regulation by authorities and surveillance from the investors before parting with their money. He said,

“These are thieves and just as they’ve used Kate Winslet’s brand to sell, they’ve used Bitcoin’s brand to get people to part with money too.”

He continued,

“This will be them fishing to see how good Kate Winslet is. For some people an A-list Hollywood star has more resonance than a UK money saving expert like me. If she is reaching a new market, you’ll see more of them.”
