Crypto Scammers Use Irish Presidential Candidate Gavin Duffy Identity in Latest Bitcoin Scheme
Gavin Duffy, an Irish presidential hopeful and Dragon’s Den entrepreneur, has fallen victim to cryptocurrency scammers, after his images and fake testimonials surfaced promoting a fraudulent automated trading site known as Bitcoin revolution.
The As Bitcoin Revolution Scam
A photo and name of the Irish presidential hopeful were featured in a bogus article, claiming that a fictitious Irish crypto firm “landed the biggest investment ever made in Dragon’s Den history.”
The piece went on to describe how two students from the University of Dublin were featured on the RTE show, pitching Bitcoin Revolution, an automated bitcoin trading platform. The ad, which surfaced online earlier in the week reported that Duffy offered a whopping 30 million euros, starting a bidding war among other Dragons. All this never happened!
The advertisement also convinced supporters to invest at least 220 euros, promising them unrealistic profits of about 1,930 euros in just a week!
The crypto scammers had done their homework well, and created a website that was much similar to that of the national broadcaster’s.
Duffy Cautions The Public
Gavin Duffy communicated through his spokesperson, noting that they know about the scam and further cautioning the public not to fall for it. The spokesperson said that:
“We are aware of this scam and we have urged the public to ignore it and report it to the relevant authorities.”
RTE Takes Action
Following the popularity of the ad, especially on social media platforms, the Ireland’s broadcasting company RTE has taken the initiative to contact Facebook in a bid to have the scam ad blocked and possibly removed.
Not the First Time Duffy Is Dragged Into Crypto Scams
The Irish presidential hopeful is not new to cryptocurrency scams. Earlier in the year, he dragged to another scam, where his identity was used by cyber criminals who were trying to con prospective investors, asking them to put money in a fake cryptocurrency firm known as BitCoin Trader.
