Dan Tapiero of DTAP Capital recently sat down for a discussion with longtime friend Dan Morehead. Tapiero describes him as “the first traditional macro fund manager to identify the Bitcoin opportunity.” Tapiero opens the discussion on Morehead’s “Bitcoin moment,” asking how he decided to get involved in Bitcoin in the first place.
Morehead stated that his brother introduced him to the original cryptocurrency asset in 2011, which was a time when Bitcoin barely cost anything to invest in. About two years later, he got a call from Mike Novogratz and Pete Berger to set up a meeting to discuss Bitcoin over coffee, leading Morehead to end up dwelling on it for months after as he immerses himself. Upon seeing the many use cases around the world, both in currency and other sectors, Morehead was locked in.
Tapiero questioned why some macro experts aren’t involved, even though they are just as intelligent as Morehead. Morehead stated that Bitcoin is just one of about 200 different currencies, but there have been millions of people to positively be impacted by Bitcoin in countries with less strong currencies already. Morehead stated that he believes that there’s also an age divide with understanding the market as well, pointing out that the millennial generation is more familiar with the digital side.
As far as the regulation of cryptocurrency, Morehead stated, “I think there’s going to be a single-digit number of global currencies,” as regulators try to control the industry in some way. Morehead predicts that the current Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP will likely be around, but there will be more stablecoins to balance out the market.
Still, the success of a token doesn’t entirely rely on the fact that its digital. The keys to becoming a successful industry for these assets is their “borderlessness” and their speed, and countries will need to develop digital options with these benefits, or it will perform no better than the current currencies they offer.
