Discord May Be The First Real Competition For Steam in Digital Distribution Market

The popular software service mostly used by video gamers, Discord, is building a a market for digital distribution marker, proving to be a real competition for Steam.

Housing around 150 million gamers, the application was announced in August, and it’s expected that its online store will provide market for games, allowing customers to purchase their favorite game. According to reports, the goal of the company is to have an “almost a local boutique bookstore experience that’s highly curated,”

According to SlugFeed, since its inception in 2015, Discord has recorded an impressive growth. Today, the company the company has focused its efforts in digital distribution market, allowing gamers to spend about $138 billion on games this year alone, which is an incredible 13.3% growth from last year.

Steam vs Discord: Tough Competition

Steam, the company that currently dominates the market when it comes to PCs, boasts approximately 23,000 games on its platform, with reports by Steam Spy stating that over 6,000 more have been added this year alone.

The number of games being added to Steam doesn’t seem to be declining, considering that the platform has become more stringent when it comes to approval of games. Steam offers users the opportunity to check with external curators, most of whom are YouTubers, to get recommendations. On the other hand, Discord plans to provide highly curated games that have been assembled by their staff, before they can accept games from the community.

Steam provides low barriers for new developers who want their games introduced to a wider community, something that raises concerns about the quality of the content provided. By developing games in-house, Discord tries to avoid such a scenario.

Discord Beta Version

The beta version of Discord’s digital storefront is already live in Canada. The service is gearing up to start with almost 100 games for the community to download. The company plans to utilize algorithms that will help its users discover new games on its platform. There will be accompanying reviews with each game as well as a guide with important data.
