Elon Musk Tweets About ‘Ethereum’, Then Chats with Vitalik Buterin in Mysterious Twitter Exchange
Elon Musk, a self-described ‘meme necromancer’ (seriously, that’s his Twitter profile description), took time out of his busy schedule on Monday night to tweet one word:
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 30, 2019
The tweet appeared online at 6:15pm PST. Seven minutes later, Musk tweeted ‘jk’.
A few minutes after that, Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin tweeted an invitation for Musk to come to Ethereum’s Devcon in October 2019.
“You should come to our Devcon in October :)”, wrote Buterin at 6:41pm PST.
Ethereum’s fourth annual Devcon took place in Prague in October/November 2018. The conference is hosted by the Ethereum Foundation every year, serving as a place where Ethereum team members can speak about new products, approaches, and technologies.
Elon Musk replied to Buterin, “Stop giving away free ETH!” with two crying laughing emojis.
Musk is referencing Buterin’s long-time Twitter username – ‘Vitalik Non-giver of Ether’, which itself is a reference to the prevalence of crypto giveaway scams that use Vitalik’s name.
No further tweets have been posted. Many commenters, however, are threatening to call the SEC on Elon Musk.
Did Musk Add the ‘jk’ Because of His Recent Settlement Agreement with the SEC?
Musk, of course, has recently been embroiled in a battle with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for his Twitter activity. Last year, Musk tweeted about his plans to take Tesla private, causing Tesla shares to surge. The SEC then claimed that Musk violated an agreement by tweeting information Musk said had already been correctly relayed to investors.
On Friday, Musk and the SEC reached a settlement. As part of the settlement, Musk has agreed that there are certain topics he needs legal approval to tweet about (seriously). The list does not contain anything about bitcoin or cryptocurrencies. Musk is mostly just restricted from tweeting about Tesla or information that could affect its finances.
After the settlement was announced, Bloomberg’s Matt Levine wrote that the SEC should have pushed Elon Musk to have to add a smiley face, a ‘jk’, or an ‘lol’ to non-serious tweets about Tesla. It’s possible the Ethereum tweet – and the corresponding jk – were a reference to this.
No Impact on ETH’s Price
It’s unclear if Musk will accept Buterin’s invitation to attend the 2019 Ethereum Devcon V event.
The tweet, by the way, does not appear to have had a significant effect on ETH’s price in one way or another.
Is Elon Musk just trolling? Or was this a calculated tweet with the goal of pumping ETH’s price? We may never know.
