Ethereum Wallet MetaMask Sees 5x Growth in 6 Months, Hits 5 Million MAUs

Popular Ethereum wallet MetaMask is enjoying explosive growth over the last six months.

Back in October, MetaMask hit the milestone of 1 million cumulative monthly active users across its browser extension and mobile app. This over 4x demand in a year was the result of demand for DeFi and blockchain gaming.

Now, an additional 5x growth was recorded as the wallet is now being used by more than 5 million users every month.

This time, the mainstream craze over NFTs is playing a part, for which Google searches are over four times higher than for DeFi. But it is the second most popular use case for MetaMask.

The most popular use case is MetaMask Swaps which is particularly seeing a lot of action with over $2 billion recorded in accumulated transaction volume over the past 6 months.

But more importantly, Global South has increased its usage of crypto, and they are using MetaMask to do that. According to ConsenSys, India and Indonesia are in the top 5 countries in MetaMask’s mobile adoption, while Vietnam and Nigeria are in the top 10. ConsenSys, which owned the MetaMask code in August last year and licensed it to prevent its commercial use noted,

“This growth opens the possibility of a more ethical internet where people control their own data and identities, can build communities, and freely associate with one another through interactions that are empowering and based on consent.”
