Ex-Kraken Engineer Says BTC’s Lightning Network has Serious Problems and Bugs Still
Lightning Network Suffers From Routing Errors and Wallets Bugs, Which Makes It Impractical Even For Experienced Users According To Dev
According to Andreas Brekken, a former software engineer at Kraken, the Lightning Network is offering underwhelming results so far. The expert has been using the network to route payments for some time and he concluded that while the Lightning Network is a cheaper option, it also has too many bugs.
In a recent report, the expert stated that the Lightning Network suffers from several routing errors and that it has major wallet bugs. Because of this, it could be considered too impractical for even users which are highly technical and already use tokens for a long time.
While trying the technology, he installed the LN and decided to go shopping. Brekken’s first purchase failed and he could not diagnose why it has happened. The second attempt, on the other hand, was successful after some trying. According to him, there are at least many routes available, at least ten of them.
His third try was with a different vendor but had several error messages and the fourth went without any issue. The fifth went wrong again. He tried different methods and wallets but gave up after numerous attempts.
The Lightning Network Is Too Impractical To Be Used
The LN is still considerably new and it was launched only four months ago, but routing issues have been a difficult problem to solve with the LN.
Peter Todd, a Bitcoin dev, has stated that the only way that the system would work better would be to create both a hub and a spoke system and then connect everybody to the hub, connecting all of the hubs later. This idea has been criticized as being too centralized, though.
The Lightning Network does not have a lot of transactions right now and has a capacity for only 100 BTC. Part of this is because the LN is a niche network (at least for now) instead of a general one.
Another aspect that has to be taken into account is that the LN has an invoice system in which the individuals have to generate them when they wish to be paid. Bitcoin is considerably simpler because you just post your public address and you receive as many payments as people want to send you.
The conclusion is that, while the LN is still in Beta, it does not look as good as it should be because it is simply too unreliable to be actually used on a wider scale at the moment.
