The Freedom of the Press Foundation Begins Accepting, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ether, and More
The FPF made the announcement after receiving a substantial cryptocurrency gift. The organization officially accepted a gift of 1,000 ETH on Monday.
A HUGE thank you to @Mainframe_HQ, who is helping kick off our cryptocurrency donation page with a donation of 1000 ETH! We are thrilled @Mainframe_HQ shares our goal of protecting journalists and whistleblowers in the digital age. https://t.co/P8q6aEZJ14

The 1,000 ETH was donated by Mainframe, a decentralized network for censorship resistance. The network first made headlines back in March when they avoided regulatory pressure after giving away their coin for free at a party.
Technically, the Freedom of the Press Foundation has accepted cryptocurrency since 2013. The company uses Stripe, which accepts bitcoin payments. However, Stripe’s support for bitcoin has been problematic, and Stripe removed support for bitcoin entirely in January 2018. The FPF stopped accepting bitcoin soon after.
Today, the organization officially launched a cryptocurrency donation page. You can donate bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Zcash through that page. All cryptocurrency donations will be used to “support press freedom”, according to the official website.
We’ve seen similar organizations adopt a welcome attitude towards cryptocurrencies. Organizations that protest the status quo, for example, often face increased pressure from regulatory authorities. PayPal suspended WikiLeaks back in 2010, for example, citing a violation to its acceptable use policy. The Freedom of the Press Foundation could face similar pressure – which is why it’s important to start accepting cryptocurrency payments today.
The FPF claims your crypto donations will help further projects like SecureDrop, the US Press Freedom Tracker, and the archival of threatened news outlets.
No tax receipts are available for cryptocurrency donations. The addresses for FPF’s bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Ethereum, and ZCash addresses are all available at the page linked above.
