Hackers Attack Atlanta Hawks Online Store Using Credit Card Malware
Most companies are considerably less secure against cyber attacks than they believe. Even large companies and institutions can be attacked and the latest example of that was a cyber attack targeted against the site of the Atlanta Hawks, a professional U. S. basketball team based in the city of Atlanta. The attack was spotted in the online store of the company on April 23.
This latest attack was discovered by Willem de Groot, a lead forensic analyst at Sanguine Security. The company, according to itself, is the largest anti-fraud database in the world, a claim that may even be somewhat exaggerated but there is no doubt that the company is relevant for its market.
According to de Groot, the attack was made using Magecart, a specific malware used for credit card cyber attacks. It exists since 2014 and several companies have been attacked by it, including some important names like the British Airways and Ticketmaster, a prominent American ticket distribution firm.
Another cybersecurity expert, a man named Matthew Melzer who works at Volexity, the main reason for the popularity of the malware is actually very straightforward: Magecart is easy to use successfully. It has a higher success rate than other attacks because credit cards have fewer defenses against it.
The online store that was attacked sells several types of merchandise and belongs to the 12th largest team of the NBA, the most well-known professional league of basketball in the world.
While the attacks were detected, the specialists are not really sure how the attack happened. One of the possibilities is that the hackers decided to attack the site directly and that they may have used third-party tools in order to gain access to the network and use their malware.
According to de Groot, 150 online stores around the whole world are compromised by Magecart daily, which is a very high number. Generally, however, the attacks are in smaller companies than this one.
A spokesperson from the Atlanta Hawks affirmed that the company had discovered the attack and they were currently investigating what happened on their system and working to restore the safety of the users again.
