Hacktivist Group ‘Anonymous’ Donates $75 Million In Bitcoin For Startups Building Privacy Tech

The activist hacker group Anonymous has made the announcement that is has a $75 million Bitcoin fund for promoting privacy-boosting technology and developing cryptocurrency.

An Anonymous press release from Wednesday provided only vague information about this fund. Named the “Unknown Fund”, its purpose is to give Bitcoin valued at $75 million to startups that are supporting the online anonymity. It has also been mentioned that the projects eligible for investment will be those that are focused on cryptocurrency, creating tools for enhancing anonymity on the internet and protecting personal data.

People Behind the Fund Prefer to Remain Anonymous

Mysterious as usual, Anonymous has said that those behind the fund are ordinary people from many countries and who don’t want to reveal their identity. It has been reported that the organizers of the fund have met on 4chan’s English imageboard. Further details haven’t been provided, which means no one knows how many Anonymous activists have organized the fund, where the $75 million comes from or how the Bitcoin is going to be distributed.

The Motives for Setting Up the Unknown Fund Revealed

While more about the Unknown Fund can’t be known, the motives behind setting it up have been revealed. Stating that protecting personal data can be very challenging nowadays, the Anonymous group has highlighted how ultra-targeted ads are being used for political purposes. It also talked about Brexit and the US presidential election campaign, saying that people’s personal data was used to give influential information about how to vote. This is what Anonymous had to say further:

“The use of data has already become a powerful tool for manipulating people. The effectiveness of this tool is both amazing and frightening.”

The Unknown Fund for Protecting People’s Freedom

The press release didn’t only address the political scene. Anonymous also said that companies are using personal data to make people addicted to social media and for exploitation. When it comes to cryptocurrency, it informed that it tries to protect the freedom and rights of those who use the blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. This is its opinion on the crypto world:

“This is a chance for humanity to create a new environment, a new and honest monetary system, and to make the world a better place.”

Privacy First

Aside from the fund, Anonymous has also mentioned some strategies to promote privacy-enhancing technologies, strategies that aren’t Bitcoin. Details on this weren’t given and postponed to be made known to the public at a later date. The press release appeared soon after the FBI said cryptocurrencies are threatening the agency more than ever.
