A show about tech entrepreneurs in today’s world cannot stay too long without mentioning cryptocurrencies. This has been the story of HBO’s Silicon Valley for the past couple of seasons.

At the start of this Season (Season 5), Silicon Valley had added Coinbase to their Intro video. That set the tone of the theme that was going to be covered this season. In Season 4, there was a mention of Ethereum in one of the episodes but didn’t take a lot of screen time. Episode 5 of Season 5 also had a reference to cryptocurrency when Gilfoyle, one of the central characters set up a jarringly loud price alert system to tell him when to remote-toggle his bitcoin mining rig.

However, the next episode, which is scheduled to air on May 7th, 2018 is titled “Initial Coin Offering”. It is to be assumed that they are going to dive deeper into the subject. Here is a snippet from the promo of the upcoming episode that mentions ICOs.

Richard: You did 36 ICOs, did it work?

Russ: It’s not always about money. Sometimes it’s about wisdom.

Gilfoyle: So you lost it all?

Notably, Richard, their protagonist had an idea to decentralize the internet to a peer-to-peer model. This system essentially uses something like a Blockchain to support the underlying technology. We can be sure that more and more tech based movies and shows will start giving more attention to cryptocurrencies and view it in a positive light.

We can only hope that the forthcoming episode of Silicon Valley is not as banal, surface-level, but price-obsessed as the episode titled “The Bitcoin Entanglement” (Season 11, Episode 9) from Big bang Theory was. John Oliver, who hosts a talk show for HBO, also covered cryptocurrencies this year and gave an analysis which sounded like the propaganda every mainstream news network had been showing.
