Healthbase aims to use blockchain technology to revolutionize healthcare research. Find out how it works today in our review.
What is Healthbase?
Healthbase, found online at Healthbase.digital, is a blockchain-powered medical research platform. The platform aims to use blockchain technology to advance medical research and healthcare initiatives. With Healthbase, researchers, care providers, and patients get easy and secure access to high-quality health data. The end result is better therapies for patients and more progress in the field of medicine.
Healthbase aims to provide benefits to patients, healthcare providers, and researchers. Patients and healthcare providers have an economic incentive to share anonymized healthcare data, while researchers can securely access accurate health data.
The Healthbase ICO is scheduled to take place in 2018. The platform has been in development since 2014, but only recently decided to build on blockchain technology on 2017 with help from the Blockchain Center of the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. Healthbase has also already partnered with two German health clinics.
What Problems Does Healthbase Seek to Solve?
Healthbase sees a problem in today’s healthcare and medical research industries: today, health-related information is scattered across a range of platforms and devices. Because of this, data access and aggregation are costly for the medical research industry.
It’s not just high costs that delay medical research; these systems also raise security and trust issues among patients and providers.
The end result of this system is a significantly lower quality of medical care where, according to the official Healthbase website, “medical errors, extensive monetary losses, fraud, and corruption are an everyday reality.”
How Does Healthbase Work?
How does Healthbase plan to solve the problems above? The company has broken its goals down into a three step process:
Step 1) Gather and store all health-related information in an immutable and secure way
Step 2) Aggregate that information for target use cases
Step 3) Give all network participants easy and secure access to data
This means high-quality data can be used to improve healthcare research and therapy outcomes like never before.
The ecosystem revolves around the use of Healthbase tokens and the Healthbase mobile app.
The app contains all health-related information for an individual. Any individual can access his or her health information through the app at any time. The main benefit of the app, however, is to allow patients to grant access rights to their health data.
A patient may grant access rights to a care provider in order to facilitate better, faster access to healthcare, for example.
Or, a patient could grant access to researchers and other third parties. The patient receives payment in the form of Healthbase tokens, while researchers can access anonymized data sets. In this situation, the tokens are split among the individuals who own the data – including the care providers that collected the data and the patient. Everyone benefits by participating in the Healthbase network.
The long-term goal is to allow Healthbase tokens to be traded for goods and services on the platform, creating extra value for the individual.
Benefits of Healthbase
Healthbase aims to provide benefits to patients, healthcare providers, and researchers. Here’s how each of the three parties will benefit:
- Patients can access all health-related data at their fingertips through the Healthbase smartphone app
- Patients can share all their health-related data with healthcare providers in order to access better healthcare
- Patients can sell anonymized data to researchers to receive money or services in return
For Healthcare Providers
- Healthcare providers get secure, easy access to the healthcare data of their patients, including data collected by other providers, without needing to individually contact each provider
- Healthcare providers get free software they can use to manage their practice more efficiently
- Healthcare providers earn money every time a patient’s anonymized data is sold to a researcher
- Healthcare providers get easy access to medical studies
- Medical researchers can easily access high-quality health data and medical studies while saving money
- Medical researchers can earn money by selling studies to other researchers over the Healthbase platform
Who’s Behind Healthbase?
Healthbase has been in active development since 2014, although the company didn’t start developing on blockchain technology until 2017. Healthbase has 160 employees working on the platform, and they’ve already partnered with two German medical clinics.
Healthbase, the blockchain company we’re reviewing today, can be found online at Healthbase.digital. There’s a separate, unrelated company called Healthbase.com, which provides medical tourism around the world.
Healthbase announced its platform to the internet with a post on Medium in October 2017, where they called the platform “the future of medical research.”
To bring the blockchain platform to life, the company has partnered with the Blockchain Center of the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management.
The Healthbase ICO
Details for the Healthbase ICO have not yet been announced. However, we do know that the ICO is preparing to launch in 2018. The tokens will be the in-platform currency used on the Healthbase platform.
Healthbase aims to create the future of medical research using blockchain technology. That blockchain allows medical researchers to interact with patients and healthcare providers through a decentralized ecosystem. Participants can benefit from sharing medical data in a transparent, secure, and anonymous way.
