Horizons to Launch Blockchain ETF on TSE
Horizons Blockchain Technology and Hardware Index ETF will be the latest ETF traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE). The ETF will join other similar exchange-traded funds, including Harvest Portfolio Group Inc. and Evolve Funds Group Inc.
Unfortunately, the two longer-standing platforms have not had much success since their introduction onto the exchange, so the hope is that Horizons will not meet with the same issues. Since Harvest Portfolio Group and Evolve Funds commenced trading on the exchange, they’ve lost more than 20 percent this year.
Perhaps Horizons will be able to differentiate itself through its provision of different services, such as hardware. The differentiation approach was discussed by Steve Hawkins, the co-chief and executive officer of Horizons ETFs Management Canada Inc.
Horizons ETF holding works on helping companies develop blockchain-related applications. To date, it has worked on projects for Hive Blockchain Technologies Ltd., semiconductor firms, and service providers such as Digital Realty Trust Inc.
According to news reports, Hawkins stated that
“We don’t know which individual blockchain companies are going to work, we have no idea what the extent of the blockchain application will be, but we do know people will have to invest in the infrastructure to build out blockchain. It’s going to be these ancillary services to the blockchain technology where the winners are going at the end of the day.”
Hawkins also mentioned that the platform does not have an interest in investments with a $20 million market cap at the platform’s current stage due to the risk. Rather, investors should be investing in the well-established global infrastructure to blockchain and avoid the risk that comes with focusing on startup blockchain development companies.
