IBM Food Trust Blockchain Network Adds Ecuador’s Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP)
Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP) recently announced that they are joining the IBM Food Trust ecosystem to provide traceability of SSP shrimp from farm to fork to their customer.
SSP is a group of leading companies sharing one main mission, that is to drive the future of shrimp aquaculture to be a clean, sustainable, and successful practice for the world. They aim to produce a healthy, nutritious, and pure product farmed in a sustainable way. The companies work in partnership with each other, and with others, to improve social and environmental performance. Moreover, they aim to create differentiation and offer an improved choice for consumers in global seafood markets, by increasing awareness of, the preferential environmental and social practices of SSP members and setting an example for others to follow.
IBM Food Trust uses blockchain technology to create unprecedented visibility and accountability in the food supply chain. It is the only network of its kind, connecting growers, processors, distributors, and retailers through a permissioned, permanent and shared record of food system data.
Jose Antonio Camposano, Executive President of the National Chamber of Aquaculture of Ecuador said:
“Food fraud is on the rise. With complex supply systems, and a global lack of transparency we are seeing too many examples of mislabeling and poor quality products entering the marketplace. It’s time we change that. Consumers have a right to know where their food is from and how it was produced. By using blockchain technology we can provide complete traceability on our products and our practices – for the first time consumers can have complete trust and assurance on what they are buying.”
Director of SSP Pamela Nath said:
“Our aim is to have SSP premium quality shrimp in supermarkets and on menus where the consumer can scan the QR code and find out which farm it is from, how it was farmed, and key indicators on its food safety and sustainability profile.”
