Internet Inventor Tim Berners-Lee to Launch Inrupt Decentralized Web Solution
Tim Berners-Lee to Launch Decentralized Web Solution
When Tim Berners-Lee introduced the web three decades ago, he envisaged a global network of computers where each party would receive its fair share. However, it panned out differently, which is why blockchain proponents are advocating for decentralization to counter the monopoly established over the web by leading technology companies. In this regard, Berners-Lee has also developed a solution to counter centralization, called Solid-Inrupt.
As mentioned above, Tim Berners-Lee is not happy with the current state of the internet. Although he acknowledges that the web has connected the world, Tim noted that the present-day web is the epitome of inequity, saying that industry leaders are skewing it to suit their agenda. Tim posted these sentiments on a blog in his new site Inrupt. According to Berners-Lee, Inrupt will form the basis for the new Solid web platform.
Solid – Reinstating Equity on the Internet
The Solid platform is open-source web solution developed as a result between Tim Berners-Lee and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Tim believes that Solid will restore parity in the web.
The primary objective of the Solid platform is to grant individuals complete control over data. Essentially, it allows users to choose where the data is stored, as well as which apps, people or groups can read or modify which elements of such data. The solution also allows users to share data at the same time as the applications are using it.
The target market for the Solid market encompasses individuals, developers and enterprises. Moreover, Tim is mulling over the introduction of Sold apps and Solid data storage alongside the main Solid platform. Ultimately, the Solid solution intends to empower internet users through data. For this reason, it will be based upon the decentralized internet, called Web3, where individuals will have entire control over data. Though it will be chargeable, Tim stated that the Solid platform will not have ulterior motives, such as tracking their online behavior of users for marketing purposes.
The Inrupt platform was established by Time Berners-Lee in partnership with John Bruce, a technology business leader. Inrupt is the basis of the Solid platform. It also acts as its commercial ecosystems. As per Berners-Lee, the presence of such a platform that offers technical support and commercial services to Solid is crucial to the Solid solution.
Despite being supportive of blockchain technology, Tim built Solid on the existing web technology. Furthermore, he has not indicated intentions of integrating the technology. For blockchain to work with Solid, it would have to be interoperable and offer multi-chain support.
