Ledger, a global leader in cryptocurrency and blockchain security and infrastructure development, has recently announced a collaboration with Intel that will change the shape of high level crypto security. By integrating the Ledger BOLOS operating system into Intel Software Guard Extensions, the joint venture aims to dramatically enhance overall crypto security.
The new security solution will be deployed on a range of cryptocurrency wallets such as MyEtherWallet and Electrum, and will involve the storage of sensitive information within an Intel SGX enclave, as opposed to app-based storage. This unique solution will prevent possible software attacks, providing end-users with a dynamic balance between software wallets and highly secure hardware wallets such as the Ledger Nano S.
Eric Larchevêque, the CEO of Ledger, has clarified the joint security effort:
“We have seen an increasing demand from the market for secure solutions to manage crypto assets over the past couple of years. Following the launch of a line of hardware wallets based on our operating system integrated in a secure chip, working with a leading player like Intel is a unique opportunity to keep providing our growing client base with innovative solutions for cryptocurrency and blockchain applications.”
Rick Echevarria, the Vice President of the Software and Services Group and General Manager of the Platforms Security Division at Intel has also commented on the partnership:
“Intel applauds Ledger’s focus on protecting user privacy and security. In deploying Intel SGX, Ledger security for blockchain solutions gain instant scalability across Intel 8th Generation Core Platforms.”
Users of Intel-based computers will be able to download the entire enclave, facilitating ease of use. The system will automatically generate private keys, with all cryptocurrency transactions signed with the SGX secure enclave.
Intel EGX is an extension that integrates with Intel processors in order to increase the security of the code and data that compose applications, allowing developers to protect said data from attack by storing it on a secure enclave on the device.
Ledger Blockchain Open Ledger Operating System, or BOLOS, is a blockchain-specific operating system designed by Ledger to streamline blockchain and cryptocurrency applications. BOLOS can be integrated into a range of different secure elements, such as secure chips or hardware security modules.
Ledger also offers a software development kit that allows third party developers to integrate the benefits offered by the SGX solution, incorporating the Intel SGX enclave in their blockchain use cases. Documentation and use cases can be found on the Ledger Github.
