Let’s Look At What Happened During Dr. Craig Wright’s Recent Appearance At The Oxford Union

Tuesday night saw self-proclaimed BTC inventor Dr. Craig Wright appear at the Oxford Union where he spoke at length about his ongoing efforts to “restore the original Bitcoin protocol as well as to help spur the growth of Bitcoin SV”.

While the event started off smoothly, as soon as the Q&A period started, things started to get a little heated — especially when a number of people in the audience put forth some tough questions for Dr. Wright.

However, before we get into all of that, we should mention that the introductory speech for the event was given by nChain chairman Jimmy Nguyen, who spoke highly about the BSV project and how it could completely change the way in which the public perceived the crypto sector at large.

Inside The Q&A Session

As mentioned previously, the Q&A session was filled with ample talking points, however, to start things off, the student moderator posed the first question to Dr. Wright regarding his identity and how many people still did now view him as Satoshi Nakamoto.

In response, Wright went on the offensive and claimed that all of the media outlets that were trying to slander his reputation were paid for by “special interest groups”. Not only that, he then went on to claim that major media players such as CCN were “owned by a group of people who had their hands full of multiple altcoins”.

On the same subject, Nguyen then chimed in by saying:

“A lot of the media platforms have their own agenda, so you’ll have to start learning to filter the truth, or the shaded truth, or non-truth of what is published. And it’s hard to understand if you don’t work in the field because you’re just reading things. I come from America and you’ve got a president who always crows that it is fake news. All of the crypto sites, most of them, have some agenda.”

When asked about the ‘Wired Controversy’, Dr. Wright responded by saying that the original post had been deleted so any evidence put forth by the media would simply be fake or doctored.

For those of our readers who are not familiar with the above-stated issue, back in 2015 Wired published a story claiming that Wright was in fact, Nakamoto. Not only that, but the story also displayed a post from Wright in which he seemed to have mystically pre-empted Bitcoin’s beta release days before its actual launch.

Wired then proceed to backtrack on the story by claiming that a search through the old versions of the post (via internet archive Wayback machine) seemed to indicate that the post might have been backdated by “someone”.

When pushed further on the issue, Wright burst out saying:

“I don’t need to face trolls in rooms. That’s why we have evidence. Here’s the thing, evidence! We have courts, and you know what happens when you lie in a court, you know the maximum penalty in this country for perjury? About 20 years! Great, I’m going to be in court, prove it in court! You get to send me to jail for 20 years, I get to put my evidence and other people get to put theirs. That’s how real things work in the real world.”

Final Take

In closing out his address at the Oxford Union, Dr. Wright proceeded to bash Twitter users by calling them “keyboard warriors” who did nothing useful for society. He also added that these “so-called” independent crypto analysts on Twitter offered little substance or data, rather they only slandered people’s reputations from the security of their own bedrooms.

“…. I think coder’s law is the lowest attack on modern society, the biggest social justice warrior attack, trying to rip down everything we have that is good. It’s really about taking away everything we’ve built over hundreds of years and going, ‘Oh, it’s just, white males.’”
