Major League Baseball and Lucid Sight Blockchain Partner For MLB Collectibles

The Major League Baseball (MLB) is disembarking in the crypto and blockchain world with new collectibles. The MLB announced on Friday that it has partnered with the blockchain startup based in Los Angeles, Lucid Sight, so as to launch a dApp game on the Ethereum platform later this year.

The main intention behind this partnership is to allow baseball fans to interact with their favorite moments on the games. The information has been released by Yahoo! Finance on July the 13th.

The system will be very similar to the one used by CryptoKitties, which has been a famous collectibles game back in 2017 when the franziness for virtual currencies was at its highest point.

MLB executive vice president of gaming and new business ventures Kenny Gersh said:

“We were already talking to Lucid Sight around the time that CryptoKitties first came out. And then CryptoKitties sort of validated it a little bit more.”

In order to play the game and take part of it, users must purchase Ether (ETH) and transfer it to MetaMask, an important and popular ethereum browser wallets. After it, they can trade digital avatars tied to specific moments in recent games and earn rewards, tickets and more.

It is important to mention that the MLB has seen less individuals attending at the games, and it hopes that the new platform can attract a broader audience.

“That is 100 percent one of the strategic goals of this initiative. Collecting items related to your team, engaging with your team in a new way,” commented Gersh. “For me, say the Red Sox win the division in a couple months, I want to buy something that symbolizes that. These will be event-based things – those moments in sports that happen that you want to remember and cherish, and have a sense that you were there, even if only digitally.”

Moreover, this new game could work to attract new individuals and interested people to the blockchain and crypto community. Lucid Sight co-founder, Octavio Herrera, said to Yahoo! Finance that they hope the game could eventually reach out a broader range of users and not just individuals related to the technological world.

The game is expected to be rolled out in different stages. For example, for the first version it will be necessary to have Ethere and MetaMask, which may be somehow more difficult to get into the game. But Mr. Herrera believes that people will open up Coinbase accounts, buy Ether and transfer them to MetaMask. In this way they can collect these new things and enjoy them.

This is not the first time that pro sports try to engage with the crypto and blockchain community. For example, Sacramento Kings, a basketball team that plays in the NBA, said that they were going to mine Ethereum so as to help charities in the country.

Some months ago, Stephen Curry decided to enter the collectibles world and sell its figure on the CryptoKitties platform.
