Man Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison After Using Bitcoin to Purchase Handgun On Dark Web
A Scottish man has been sentenced to five years in prison after being caught in a joint police operation. David Mitchell purchased a Glock 9mm gun for £2,000. He has also bought a silencer, magazine and 150 round of 9mm ammunition, according to a recent report released by Bloomberg.
The buyer purchased the gun using Bitcoin (BTC) and attempted to ship it from the United States to Scotland. The Organized Crime Partnership was able to intercept the package and send a placebo instead to Mr. Mitchell. The package was surveilled and tacked to his house.
After this, police received a search warrant and stormed the house searching for the placebo. He has been confirmed guilty for possessing a firearm and sentenced to five years in prison.
During the court hearing, his defense lawyer John Scott explained that he did not intend to hurt anyone with this firearm. However, he had a history of depression and behavior problems that affected his life. Interestingly, he has also mentioned that David Mitchell performed the transaction just to confirm that it could be performed.
The hearing at High Court in Edinburgh concluded:
“It appears that your decision to acquire the gun and the other items arose from an obsessive preoccupation on your part with exploring whether it was possible to do so by making use of the dark web. […] You must have appreciated that this was unlawful: For this conduct, you must be punished.”
Mitchell did not provide any clear reason for purchasing the firearm said Detective Chief Superintendent Gerry McLean. That means that it is not possible to understand whether he had any other motives or not. The main priority of the police forces is to keep citizens safe.
This is not the first time that there is an individual convicted for purchasing illegal things using the dark web. Indeed, Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, a dark web marketplace popular a few years ago, has received a life sentence in jail after his role in the Silk Road.
