Mozilla Firefox Blocks Cryptojacking Attacks for Web Browsing Safety for Users via Disconnect

Mozilla Firefox, one of the largest web browsers, has decided to improve its security and protect users from crypto mining malware.

The main goal is to avoid users to be affected by cryptojacking attacks. The information was released by the firm in a recent blog post.

Mozilla Firefox Improves its Security Features

When the cryptocurrency market was at its highest point, crypto mining attacks started to spread all over the internet. During the last year, new attackers and methods to infect users’ computers have been implemented by hackers.

With a simple script, attackers could inject malware in a website that would consume users’ electricity and CPU power to mine virtual currencies such as Monero (XMR).

In the latest Firefox Nightly 68 and Beta 67 versions, the firm decided to protect users from cryptocurrency mining attacks. This is part of a broad effort known as Content Blocking and other protections. In order to be able to develop this security feature, Firefox worked side by side with the privacy and security software firm Disconnect.

This implementation works by blacklisting services such as Coinhive and CryptoLoot, among others. In this way, Mozilla Firefox can be protected against these attacks. At the moment, the solution and protection are not enabled by default but it can be added through the Privacy and Security settings’ section.

Another method that attackers have to steal users funds is known as “fingerprinting.” These scripts are invisibly embedded on many different web pages and allow malicious attackers to follow your path on the internet, even if you clear the cookies.

About it, Firefox wrote:

“To combat these threats, we are pleased to announce new protections against fingerprinters and crypto miners. In collaboration with Disconnect, we have compiled lists of domains that serve fingerprinting and crypto mining scripts. Now in the latest Firefox Nightly and Beta versions, we give users the option to block both kinds of scripts as part of our Content Blocking suite of protections.”

This is not the first web browser that decided to block crypto jacking attacks. Opera announced in December 2018 that they will be protecting users from crypto jacking scripts online.

Opera has recently released a new version of its web browser that also has an integrated crypto wallet called Opera Wallet.

This shows that web browsers are tacking seriously the threats experienced by users on the internet and implementing different solutions to help users be protected.
