Munchee is a blockchain-based food review app available for iOS. Find out how it works today in our review.
What is Munchee?
Munchee, found online at Munchee.io, is a blockchain-based review platform for foods. The platform describes itself as a combination between Yelp and Instagram. You can use it to satisfy food cravings – say, when you’re hungry but don’t know what to eat. You can scroll through a selection of foods within the app to find the best dishes at restaurants near you.
Munchee isn’t a direct copy of Yelp. The platform doesn’t review restaurants. Instead, the goal is to focus on the quality of the food – not the rating of the restaurant.
We all know about local restaurants that are famous for one particular dish. Munchee lets you view the most popular dishes in your area – so even if a restaurant doesn’t have a great overall rating on Yelp, it may have one excellent dish that’s famous in the area. Munchee lets you find that dish and pick the best foods for your cravings.
The app is available online through the iTunes App Store, where it’s categorized as a “Nearby Food and Foodie Photo Journal.”
Munchee advertises all of the following features:
- Create your own food collections and “Pin” your favorite dishes to your dashboard
- Learn which food is good in your local area with a real-time food feed
- Satisfy cravings with informative visual search results (like a combination of Instagram and Yelp, as we mentioned above)
- Snap a picture of a food dish, then review it and share it with other foodies
- Be a food influencer and receive rewards
Overall, Munchee claims its features make it “the ultimate food review app”.
Munchee and Blockchain
Munchee’s app is currently available on the iTunes App Store, and it will be launched soon on the Google Play Store. However, the current version of the app isn’t built on blockchain technology. That part is coming next.
The goal is to create a decentralized platform that provides high-quality reviews without the threat of review manipulation. Meanwhile, Munchee will reward users with MUN tokens that can be exchanged for food and services at partner restaurants.
At the same time, restaurants can sign up for MUN tokens to avoid the high transaction fees charged by credit card companies and other third party payment providers.
The MUN token can also be used to buy advertising and promotional services within the platform.
Munchee users have an incentive to become active partners in the network. They receive tokens in exchange for their time and creativity when posting content to the platform. They can spend those MUNs on meals and services, while restaurants can spend MUNs on advertisements within the platform.
The Munchee Token Sale
There will be a total and finite supply of 500 million MUN tokens. Of that supply, 225 million MUN will be listed for sale through the pre-sale and crowdsale, with the remaining 275 million MUN held in reserve by the company. The company will use funds for bounties, team compensation, testing, and future rewards.
The token sale begins on October 31 with the pre-sale. The pre-sale will start at 13:00 UTC and will run for 24 hours.
A second pre-sale will take place on November 1 at 13:00 UTC, and will run for 13 days. Tokens will be offered at a 10% discount (1 ETH = 5000 MUN).
A third pre-sale will begin on November 8 at 13:00 UTC and will run for 7 days. Tokens will be available at a 5% discount rate, or 1 ETH =4736.84 MUN.
Finally, the general crowdsale will begin on November 14 at 13:00 UTC, and will continue for 31 days. Tokens will be sold at the base rate of 1 ETH = 4500 MUN during this sale.
Who’s Behind Munchee?
Munchee is led by co-founders Sanjeev Verma, PhD (blockchain advisor at UC Berkeley), Chelsea Lam (former Team Lead at Google), and Nghi Bui (CTO, machine learning PhD candidate formerly at Atlassian).
Development on Munchee first began in Q4 2015. By Q4 2016, the company had launched a private beta, and the public beta launched in Q1 2017. In Q2 2017, Munchee’s app officially launched on iOS.
Munchee aims to create a decentralized foodie platform with verified reviews posted on an immutable blockchain. Munchee’s app has already been released for iOS, with an Android version scheduled for release in the near future. Over the next year, Munchee plans to develop Ethereum smart contracts for use within the app.
The ecosystem revolves around MUN tokens. Restaurants can spend MUN tokens on in-platform advertising, while users can receive MUN tokens in exchange for sharing reviews. MUN tokens can be spent at participating restaurants.
