New Bitcoin Blockchain Genesis Block Easter Egg Discovered After Nearly 10 Years
A 10 Year Old Bitcoin Easter Egg Was Just Found
Something very unexpected has happened recently as a person has discovered an easter egg buried deep inside the Bitcoin original code. The secret is 10 years old and dates to the creation of the cryptocurrency.
An easter egg, in case you do not, is a secret that is hidden in some type of work. You have to be really lucky or to really look a lot for it to find it. They are generally funny or cool and often make references to past events or culture. They are named, obviously, after easter eggs, maybe because it is a joy to find them.
The easter egg finding, which was originally reported by The Next Web’s Hard Fork, is a reference made by Satoshi Nakamoto to the 2008 crisis. The easter egg is a hexidecimalized version that references the Times headline “Chancellor on Brink of a second bailout for banks”, which is the phrase that has become a mantra for creating Bitcoin.
While this is not something very noteworthy, it is interesting to see that people are still finding new things on the code, which has been extensively analyzed for 10 years now.
The information was found in the Genesis block of Bitcoin, which was created in January 3, 2009. It looks like Satoshi Nakamoto has included in the information in the encrypted version of the pseudocode used for the miners to confirm the transactions that enable them to receive their money.
The specific variable is on line #1616 and the message is written backward. It looks like Satoshi’s vision is all over the code, as he was sure to let his mark on his creation.
Will we be finding new easter eggs 10 years into the future? Hardly, but we can only hope that Bitcoin still has some interesting secrets on it.
