New Ledger Nano S Firmware Update Scheduled For Early January 2019 Release

The Updated Of The Ledger Nano S firmware Will Be Released In Early January 2019

The Ledger Nano S firmware 1.5 is soon going to be released; this will be able to bring a new cryptographic algorithm to the market, additional features and some security improvements.

There Is A New Cryptographic Algorithm That Will Soon Be Released

The Ledger company is aiming to provide its various users with a flexible algorithm, on that will be able to support a maximum number of blockchain and the different crypto projects in the industry.

There are several upgrades we should expect to see from the update, one that will be able to provide possibilities for the third party developers in the market, to ensure they bring the needed support for their favorite crypto assets. This will be done by adding different cryptographic algorithms which were not made available before.

The company will gradually be adding new algorithms in the BOLOS; once they have been developed they will be deployed to the devices that are available through the firmware updates. With the update, it will be able to provide the following algorithms.

• There will be new hashes

The BLAKE2B, which will enable the size reduction of different projects that are already using the BLAKE2B, this is the Komodo and ZCash that is following the sapling update, Nano and many more.

The Groestl hash will enable to support the Groestlcoin in the future.

• There will be new signatures

The Schnorr with the Zilliqa scheme will be made available, a feature that will enable the support of the Zilliqa in the future.

• There will be new derivation schemes made available

The Bip32-ed25519 will be available, a feature that will enable the future support of the new Tezos and the Cardano derivation paths.

Expect To See Some Security Improvements Made

The security team behind the Donjon security has been working ruthlessly attacking the current Ledger Nano S and also taking the necessary steps in evaluating the software attack. As a result, it has led to some significant improvements being made on the code and the overall architecture.

Here Are Some Of The Security Features You Should Expect To See.

• There will be a full redesign of the arithmetic architecture.

• The MCU will be improved the firmware attestation.

• There will be an implementation of the PIN Code, which has been approved to ensure it will resist the cyber-attacks.

• There will be a hardening of the PIN Code done against the various hardware together with the side channel attacks.

Not forgetting with the 1.5 firmware-version it has been considered to be the very first release that has been fully evaluated against the CSPN-certification. The Certification de Securite de Premier Niveau, CSPSN, is deemed to be the first level security certification that has been issued by the ANSSI, which is the French National Security Agency.

Some Additional Features To Look Out For

There is a WebUSB that has been enabled to be used on the dashboard, with this in place it will allow for easy application management being used from any of the compatible browsers. When we look into the future, it will mean that the applications that are similar to the Ledger Live will easily install the multiple apps or be able to efficiently reinstall the apps after the firmware update has been done.

The application management has dramatically improved just to ensure the free space is easily recovered once the application gets deleted. It solves the issue many have been having of removing all the current applications just to go ahead and reinstall one. Ensure to stay tuned to enjoy the full release.
