Have a website and trying to figure out how to make money? If you are into crypto you have probably heard of the term “cryptojacking.” While this may seem like a good idea at first, it is probably not smart. Using the computer of your readers to mine cryptos like Monero (XRM) may not be the best use of your time or your readers.
Not only because this is highly unethical, but it is also not very profitable. A new research piece made by scientists of the University of Crete and the University of Illinois has found some interesting data on this.
According to it, someone can get 5.5 times more money by using three ads on a site than for using a cryptojacking script. In case you don’t know, these scripts are used to take the visitor’s computing power and mine tokens with it.
It was discovered that people simply don’t stay for enough time in the sites for cryptojacking to be effective. For this strategy to be profitable, the owners would need people to stay over five minutes in their sites.
Using this strategy can also be a nuisance since mining uses a lot of the user’s CPU. This may also prompt the person to shut the page quickly. Google also ranks quicker sites better, so using scripts can affect Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
In spite of all the issues, cryptojacking scripts can be considered effective in some cases. Movie streaming sites, for instance, have their users spending a lot of time there, so this monetization trick may be worth it. This may cause reputational damages to the sites, however.
Because of all these issues, the study concluded that cryptojacking scripts are “dead”. They are not a good way to make money, unlike their malware counterparts, and they are deemed as very annoying by the users.
