What Is nOS?

nOS is a virtual operating system that aims to create a new, transparent internet. The platform is built on the NEO blockchain.

Key features of nOS include decentralized apps with open, transparent, and immutable back-end code running on the NEO blockchain. nOS also uses GAS as a utility token while also automatically converting GAS into different NEP-5 tokens depending on the decentralized app. Developers can also create Universal Smart Contracts, or USC, to create popular back-end functions like CRUD and Authentication.

The nOS project was first unveiled by founder and developer Dean van Dugteren at the NEO Loves Amsterdam Conference in April 2018.

How nOS Works

nOS is a virtual operating system for NEO. The operating system will run on mobile and desktop devices. It functions like a browser and app store.

The goal of nOS is to encourage widespread consumer-level adoption of NEO decentralized apps (dApps) by providing a safer and easier way to use applications.

After installing the nOS client, users can log into nOS using their encrypted WIF or hardware wallet. The user dashboard features a dApp browser, a wallet for your NEP-5 tokens, and a profile where you can verify your AML/KYC identity requirements. Users can also run decentralized apps 100% client-side in an isolated environment. Plus, users can automatically log in using their nOS profile and wallet information.

Another unique feature on nOS is the ability to automatically convert GAS to NEP-5 tokens. Specifically, users can only use GAS tokens on the nOS platform. However, those tokens are converted into NEP-5 tokens based on the needs of a particular app. In other words, consumers can access any type of decentralized app without needing to purchase each individual app’s NEP-5 tokens.

nOS will also provide a “buy and run” prompt that allows users to purchase NEP-5 tokens at market price using GAS.

The end result of all of these features is a browser that makes it easy to navigate the world of NEO. You can use nOS to easily explore NEO dApps, for example, and purchase various NEP-5 tokens.

On the back-end, nOS is introducing a JavaScript library that allows developers to build applications with familiar frameworks – including support for React and Vue.js. Transcription and invocation requests can be sent to the NEO blockchain using simple JavaScript functions. Smart contract code, meanwhile, can be programmed in any of the general purpose languages supported by NEO.

One final feature worth mentioning is the introduction of nOS’s Universal Smart Contract, or USC. Each USC is hosted on the NEO blockchain. Developers can encode smart contracts with behaviors like authentication, storage management, and NEP-5 behaviors. The goal is to simplify the development of smart contracts in the NEO ecosystem.

nOS is being developed with the following core features in mind:

Open Back-Ends:

nOS’s decentralized apps (dApps) will have open, transparent, and immutable back-end code. That code will be running on the NEO blockchain.

Uses GAS As A Utility Token:

nOS will use GAS as a utility token. Users can use GAS to interact with all decentralized apps on the nOS platform, and nOS will automatically convert GAS into the NEP-5 tokens needed for each dApp.

Universal Smart Contracts (USC):

nOS will have a Universal Smart Contract, or USC, that offers popular back-end functions like CRUD and authentication for decentralized apps.

Decentralized Authority:

Users can stake nOS tokens to gain voting power on the nOS platform. High-quality applications will get rewarded and become more discoverable with voting power, for example, which also protects users from applications with low reputation.

Who is Behind nOS?

nOS’s development is led by City of Zion developers, including founder and developer Dean van Dugteren, best-known as the founder of Click.DJ and VDT Network.

Other notable team members include Jason Perry (creator of NEO Ruby) and Matt Huggins (who maintains the Neon Wallet).

The project was first announced in April 2018. Soon after the announcement in Amsterdam, nOS published its Github repositories, including its MVP client, development environment, and smart contract back-end online.

By the end of Q2 2018, nOS hopes to release its first public testnet and end-user client. At the launch of the testnet, the platform will have usable dApps available to users.

nOS Token ICO Details

nOS will hold a token generation event, or TGE, in Q3 2018.

If you’re developing apps on nOS or contributing to development in any way, then you’ll receive priority during the whitelisting process.

Specific dates or details for the token sale have not yet been announced.

Although nOS uses GAS as a utility token, the platform will also have its own native token called nOS. This token will be used in the staking system. The more tokens you stake, the better your reputation on the platform will be. Developers with a large amount of staked tokens will be rewarded with better visibility within the nOS ecosystem.
