Presearch is a decentralized search engine powered by the community. Find out how Presearch works today in our review.
What Is Presearch?
Presearch, found online at Presearch.io, is a decentralized search engine that promises to introduce much-needed change to the online search community.
In an introductory video for Presearch, the company describes how never before in history has one company (i.e. Google) controlled so much of the world’s access to information. Google is responsible for 77% of searches worldwide. The way Google displays information, and the Google search algorithms, have a powerful impact on the way we view the world.
Google is a gatekeeper. It has an impact on virtually every industry and every topic. That’s why Presearch believes it’s time for change.
With that in mind, Presearch is creating a transparent search engine they describe as “fundamental” to the open internet. It’s an alternative search engine that reimagines online searches from the ground up. It uses community involvement to build search data.
The company’s crowdsales are taking place throughout September. During these crowdsales, you can purchase tokens to gain early access to the platform. Tokens will be used to incentivize development of the platform or add new information to the platform. In the early stages of Presearch, searchers will also receive tokens for searching with the platform.
How Does Presearch Work?
Presearch’s search engine revolves around the use of Presearch Tokens. These tokens are used to contribute to the platform and promote the platform.
Obviously, the biggest problem of any community-based project – like a social network or a community-based search engine – is to attract a critical mass of users. How does Presearch plan to draw users away from competitors like Google?
The company’s first strategy is to target the most frequent searchers – web workers – and gain early adoption. In the future, they’ll release versions of Presearch to the open source community. These open sourced versions will use a blockchain-based index, curated by the community.
One of the key features of Presearch is its transparency. Google uses thousands of factors in its search algorithm. Even the world’s leading SEOs and reverse engineers haven’t been able to determine all of these factors, or figure out how Google’s search algorithm works. Furthermore, these signals are constantly changing. This lack of transparency is frustrating to content creators. Presearch wants to change that by making its ranking signals publicly available to anyone.
Some of the key advertised features for Presearch include:
The key feature of Presearch is the decentralized search platform. This platform promises to be more transparent and fair than centralized search engines like Google.
- Presearch will use open and transparent ranking factors that allow content creators to access a level playing field, giving users the choice of which data sources to utilize
- Community-driven decision-making process ensures that everyone’s interests are aligned, and that the best content is surfaced and displayed
- The ability to vote on and fund development projects provides the ability to influence and improve the platform over time; developers earn tokens for their contributions
Users can purchase tokens during the Presearch crowdsale; several token creation events are taking place throughout August and September. Some of the purposes of the Presearch Token ecosystem include:
- Tokens will be issued to early adopters to reward usage and promote the platform (you may be able to earn PST tokens through searching on the platform)
- Token holders will be able to vote on decisions, or use their tokens to suggest and fund projects
- Developers will receive tokens for contributing to features and projects
- Advertisers can purchase targeted, non-intrusive keyword sponsorship spaces using Presearch Tokens
The tokens, by the way, fall under the symbol PST.
The Presearch Token Sale
There will be a total supply of 1 billion PST tokens. 200 million tokens will be sold during the crowdsale (maximum cap). 5% of the total token supply will be sold in the pre-sale. 20% will be sold to early adopters. 30% are set aside for future public sale. 30% are allocated for distribution to reward usage, contributions to, and promotion of the platform. A final 15% is retained by the development, marketing, and community teams.
The first lot of tokens went on sale in July. The second went on sale on August 8, and a future sale is planned for September 7. Future sales (Lot 4 and 5) are expected throughout September, with a final token issuance at the end of September.
Who’s Behind Presearch?
Presearch is led by Project Lead Colin Pape, a serial entrepreneur best-known for creating community commerce network ShopCity.com. And, in 2011, Colin “found himself mired in a battle with Google and realized that the world desperately needs a transparent and open search engine.”
Other key members of the team include Rob Calvert, Nolan Dubeau, and David Keefe.
Many organizations have tried to challenge Google’s dominance in the search market. Bing has been quietly chipping away at Google’s market share over the years. However, with over 75% of the world’s searches taking place on Google, the company has a dominant hold over the market. This hold gives Google unprecedented control over the world’s access to information.
These are problems that Presearch seeks to solve. The community-sourced ecosystem plans to use blockchain tokens to incentivize the creation of a transparent search engine. With Presearch, content creators will be able to view transparent ranking signals, giving them an even playing field that they don’t have with Google.
