Revisiting WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange’s 50,000% Crypto ROI As Price of Bitcoin Moves Back Up
Who can forget the epic Tweet by Jullian Assange which showed the world the importance of Bitcoin? In October 2017, Assange posted a screenshot of bitcoin prices on July 18, 2010, and October 14, 2017, on industry website CoinDesk.
In this period, the price of bitcoin went from $0.06 to around $5,814. This represents a 9,689,900 percent increase. Assange, however, said that he has made a 50,000% return, presumably investing in bitcoin over the six-year period
Wikileaks continues their Bitcoin donations
Last month when Assange was arrested, Bitcoin donations started to pour in. In just 24 hours, the Wikileaks bitcoin wallet address has logged 314 transactions. Contributions now top 6.7 BTC, or roughly $34,000.
In addition to Bitcoin, Wikileaks also accepts donations in fiat (via Mastercard, Visa, Amex, Discover, bank transfer, cheque, and hard cash) and privacy-oriented cryptocurrency Zcash. While there is no data available on fiat donations, Wikileaks‘ public Zcash address remains mostly inactive at pixel time.
Bitcoin and Wikileaks go back to 2011 when the cryptocurrency kept financial assistance flowing to the guerrilla publisher after Paypal, Mastercard, Visa and Bank of America disabled services to Wikileaks under political pressure from the U.S. In return, bitcoin, then newly incepted, enjoyed international attention for the Wikileaks association.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the anti-government Assange is a longtime bitcoin fan. In 2017, Assange tweeted that “Bitcoin is the real Occupy Wall Street,” referencing the progressive anti-consumerist movement that launched in 2011.
If Wikileaks holds on to these Bitcoins, they could conceivably relinquish an extra 50,000% increase from the said price, leading his initial investment to potentially appreciate by 100,000% some day.
