Roger Ver Comes Out Publically In Opposition Of #DeleteCoinbase Campaign
BitcoinExchangeGuide had reported a couple of weeks back about the launch of #DeleteCoinbase campaign on social media.
Following the acquisition of Neutrino, a blockchain analytics platform, by Coinbase, cryptocurrency enthusiasts who are not satisfied with the move have taken to social media to launch the #DeleteCoinbase campaign, to instigate users to boycott the cryptocurrency exchange.
Chief executive of the analytics unit, Giancarlo Russo, along with two other C-suite members, actively participate in Hacking Team, a cybersecurity startup that sold spyware and questionable pieces of software to purportedly human rights abuser groups and governments.
Skeptics of the acquisition quickly rallied on Twitter through the #DeleteCoinbase tag, with participants of this movement including the @BTC handle, Mr. Hodl, Udi Wertheimer, Tone Vays, among other preeminent industry commentators. Funnily enough, some actually deleted their Coinbase accounts, posting emails and transcripts as proof of their torching of the crypto establishment. CEO Brian Armstrong announced that Coinbase would ‘transition’ former members of Hacking Team from recently acquired Neutrino.
Anthony Pompliano, co-founder of Morgan Creek Digital and recognized Bitcoin supporter, also suggested that the company was responding effectively to the allegations.
However, Roger Ver, who happens to be an early investor in Coinbase is not a big fan of the campaign. He called on to his followers to remember what the company has done for crypto adoption.
“Coinbase has done more to drive cryptocurrency adoption than just about any other company. We should be grateful despite a few poor decisions along the way. Don’t #DeleteCoinbase.”
It remains to be seen whether the controversy will make any meaningful dent in Coinbase’s user base, given the platform’s convenience for entry-level users and the hassle associated with switching providers – a source of customer inertia in financial services since long before cryptocurrency was invented.
