Russian Electronic Voting Based on Blockchain to be used for Parliamentary Election in Moscow
The Russian capital city of Moscow has recently decided to employ the use of blockchain technology as the framework for electronic voting and has had its city council send a bill for this purpose.
The city’s parliament known as the Moscow City Duma, hopes to use blockchain technology to secure the procedure and outcome of their upcoming elections, making the elections as free and fair as possible.
About the Bill on Blockchain Technology
The bill, which was sponsored by Dmitry Vyatkin who is currently the second in command in United Russia – Russia’s ruling party -, is said the be one of the best ways to prevent manipulation of the process and to eliminate election misconduct.
Dmitry also explained that the blockchain electronic system will isolate the voters’ identities and keep it away from the end results of the elections saying that:
“It will be impossible to connect them. This is exactly how blockchain technology works.”
Blockchain Use in Electoral Processes
In December of 2018, Russia successfully conducted a regional election in Saratov Oblast and did this with the help of a polling system based on blockchain technology. The election had at least 40,000 partakers and was largely considered free, fair and devoid of hitches. The electronic polling framework used during this election was created in 2017 by Kaspersky Lab and is called Polys.
The National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre of Thailand also recently declared that they were in the process of creating an electronic voting system reliant on blockchain technology.
Reports also have it that the Ukrainian government in collaboration with a blockchain company called the Bitfury Group, is also considering the possibility of using blockchain technology for election processes. Already, an agreement between both of them has been signed and development has possibly started.
Valeriy Vavilov, CEO of the Bitfury Group, has said that implementation of blockchain technology will help any government grow and develop itself quite considerably. Valeriy said:
“A reliable governmental system, built on the blockchain, will be able to assure the growth of assets to billions of dollars and create a significant social and economic effect in the global perspective by solving the problem of transparency and accountability.”
