Shift Card – US Bitcoin Debit Card Connects To Coinbase Wallet App?
Shift Card is a bitcoin debit card available to American bitcoin users. Find out everything you need to know about the card today in our review.
What Is Shift Card?
Shift Card, found online at ShiftPayments.com, is a debit card that can be used online and offline, just like an ordinary VISA card.
The card connects to your Coinbase account – and other cryptocurrency accounts – to let you easily top it off anytime.
There’s also an app for iOS and Android that lets you manage your card balance, view transactions, and control everything related to your credit card.
Obviously, there are other bitcoin and cryptocurrency debit cards out there. Shift Card, however, claims to be “the first U.S. bitcoin debit card.”
Shift Card Fees
Shift Card emphasizes low fees and transparency. Here are the most important fees you need to know about:
- Card Issuance/Replacement: $10 USD
- Annual Fee: $0
- Domestic Transactions: $0 (including a 0% BTC to USD conversion fee)
- Domestic ATM Withdrawals: $2.50
- International Transactions: 3%
- International ATM Withdrawals: $3.50
How Does The Shift Card Work?
The Shift Card is available exclusively to residents of the United States. However, it’s not available to residents of all states (right now, 45 out of 50 states are accepted). You can view the updated list of accepted states at the Shift Card FAQs page.
In terms of spending and withdrawal limits, Shift sets a limit of $1,000 USD. If you’re spending from your Dwolla account, there’s a daily ATM withdrawal limit of $500. For Coinbase, it’s a daily ATM withdrawal limit of $200.
Once you’ve got your Shift Card in hand, you don’t need to do anything special to make it work. You can use it at any merchant that accepts VISA. There’s no need to look for merchants that accept bitcoin.
The card can also be used for online purchases. You can choose to order a digital card, in which case you just get a string of numbers that’s usable at any online merchant.
The card is connected directly to your Coinbase account. When you pay for something, the value of your purchases will be deducted from your BTC balance, then converted directly into USD at the current exchange rate.
About Shift Payments
Shift Payments is a payment processing platform that lets you pay suppliers and customers instantly with a card. There’s no need for checks or ACH.
This past month, they unveiled the new Shift Card as a complement to their existing services.
Shift also lets its merchant customers whitelabel the card. So if you have previously ordered a physical or digital wallet from another company, then it’s possible that you’re already technically using a Shift card.
When you order a Shift Card, the card will be issued by an FDIC member bank called the Metropolitan Commercial Bank, a New York City-based bank. This appears to be done for VISA compliance purposes.
Shift Card Conclusion
The Shift Card is one of the more popular bitcoin debit cards available today. It offers low fees relative to traditional credit cards, and it connects directly to your Coinbase account to allow you to spend your BTC balance in USD.
The card also comes with a convenient app for iOS or Android, letting you manage your balance, view transaction information, and track all other card-related data.
You can learn more about the Shift Card today by visiting ShiftPayments.com. You’ll need to be a resident of the United States to order the card. It’s also not available in all 50 states (it’s available in 45 out of 50 states at the moment).
