Square Cash App Crypto Platform Adds Former Director from Google is the First Addition
- The new Square Crypto initiative has hired Steve Lee as their first employee.
- Lee formerly worked as part of Google and with Bitcoin Optech.
Square is a payments company that is run by Jack Dorsey, the same man that heads up Twitter. Dorsey has been vocal about his support for the crypto industry, but he has put his money where his mouth is recently with the announcement of Square Crypto. The company is still being built up, but The Block reports that the crypto initiative from Square has made its first hire – Steve Lee.
The new initiative took to Twitter to commemorate Lee’s move to the new company.
Hey guys. Management again. Unfortunately, things didn't work out with Gary. However, we think we've found somebody who can live up to his commitment to decentralization. Please welcome Steve Lee, aka @moneyball, to the Square Crypto team.

Equally excited, Lee reposted the news, and commented that he is “very excited” to make this transition happen.

Lee, who formerly worked as a director for Google, may be added on staff, but there has yet to be any details about the role that he will be taking on. When he worked with Google, he was in charge of product management for mobile apps, Google Maps, and the location platform for Google. He also was a co-founder for Google Glass, though his most recent endeavor was with Bitcoin Optech, helping to bring
“open source technologies and techniques to Bitcoin-using businesses.”
The work on Square Crypto was only announced to the public a few months ago, and it will be helping to establish an ecosystem for Bitcoin and the rest of the crypto industry. However, it will remain separate from the Square ecosystem.
