Tencent Video Game Business Opens Wegame Streaming Platform Store
Wegame Expanding Its Streaming Platform to Become Steam’s Global Competitor
Wegame, which currently happens to be the biggest video game streaming platform is expanding its operations in a bid to reach a global audience. WeGame is owned by Tencent Holdings, which to-date happens to be the biggest video games-based business in the world in terms of revenue.
The company recently made an announcement indicating that there are plans to launch an international version of the WeGame store. The platform will first be launched in Hong Kong before it can arrive in other markets, according to a report published in the South China Morning Post.
WeGame was initially launched in September and was meant to act as a permanent replacement for its predecessor—the Tencent Games Platform. It is expected that the platform will launch with an initial catalog of about two hundred and twenty titles.
Many of the titles that are to be included in the launch will comprise of selections from some of the most popular global companies, e.g., FIFA online and Monster Hunter World. The catalog will also feature a number of various additional Chinese titles.
In a recent interview conducted by South China Morning Post, a spokesperson for WeGame went on record to note that Tencent hopes it will be able to expand its selection to include more titles in the future once they have launched the official website.
However, the company has not specified when the website will be launched. Tencent is optimistic that the new project under development will make it possible for it to introduce Chinese games to its international market.
What Inspired The New Project?
It is understood that the Tencent’s interests in bringing its WeGame platform to an international audience may have been a way of responding to Valve’s plans to launch a Chinese version of its Steam platform. It is a platform that is being launched as a joint collaboration with Perfect World.
Although Valve has already confirmed that the project is currently under development, it has not provided its official release date, as of yet. A survey recently conducted by Valve showed that more than a quarter of all its Steam users had set Chinese as their preferred language.
From the results of this survey, it showed that there is a possibility that many of the people using Steam reside in China, or are of Chinese origin. Tencent has gone ahead to acquire or invest in a number of gaming companies in anticipation of the international WeGame Launch.
Some of these companies include Fortnite Developer, Ubisoft, Epic Games, Activision Blizzard, Riot Games, and many more. All this is meant to give it an advantage over its competitors as it will be able to bring in more titles to its website once it is ready to go live.
Currently, WeGame operates like a Hong Kong-based website, which means that it can be accessed by gamers in China. It is, however, not based in China, meaning that it does not have to operate based on the strict regulations put in place by the Chinese government.
