Tony Hawk’s Nonprofit Accepts Crypto Donations via Bitpay Partnership
Tony Hawk Foundation, one of the largest global nonprofit organizations which mainly funds skatepark projects, is now accepting donations made in crypto. Announcing this, the organization said that it would be receiving Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash.
On this initiative, however, the NGO will be relying upon the services of Bitpay, an organization which already has more than 100 other NGOs under its wings. It is also reported that it has previously handled $37 million worth of donations over the past three years.
About The Tony Hawk Foundation
Though the organization isn't the first to accept donations made in cryptocurrencies, the whole decision undoubtedly marks yet another huge milestone in the industry. Tony Hawk Foundation is the brainchild of Tony Hawk, a pro skater and has already helped an incredible 623 skatepark projects.
He is arguably the most recognizable pro skateboarders across the world and has influenced millions of skating hopefuls, helping them jump on the four-wheeled board. The American athlete is also known for a host of skateboarding tricks which he invented, some of whom even featuring in movies.
The skater chose to continue his legacy after seeing his tricks feature in Gleaming the Cube and the Bones Brigade, two successful movies. And so, after being the pioneer of the contemporary vertical skateboarding, he embarked on forming the Tony Hawk Foundation to help youths interested in the sport.
Today, several years after, the foundations boast of over 500 grant recipients who gladly operate successful skateparks. All the parks established as a result of the NGO's help host an incredible five million skateboarders annually.
For the foundation, the fact that it will be open to crypto donations, therefore, means it will be expanding its wings to more donors. Furthermore, having Bitpay at the heart of every single coin donated will undoubtedly give all potential donors the confidence that their BTC and BCH will be handled well.
According to the executive director of the NGO, Miki Vuckovich, the organization is excited as it moves onto the new chapter. He said that THF had for long been known for its innovative approach to creating communities.
The foundation was established as a result of the growing need among parents and children in America to have a safe, legal place for their kids to skate. Emails in thousands, set to Tony Hawk, compelled him to start the foundation and help them skate safely. The organization has been awarded $9 million to support its objective.
Bitpay Has Already Handled $37 Million Worth Of Donations in Crypto
The Tony Hawk Foundation couldn't have efficiently handled crypto donations alone, and thus chose to partner with Bitpay. The Atlanta based cryptocurrency payment processor, on the other hand, is no stranger in supporting similar initiatives, given that it now has over 100 nonprofits under its rudder.
Some of the NGOs it works in partnership with include the Wikimedia Foundation, Greenpeace, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Heifer International, and The Water Project. It also works in tandem with the American National Red Cross.
The crypto payments getaway also boasts of over $37 million in crypto-denominated donations. It allows one to conveniently donate, via a smartphone or PC. Also, each BTC or BCH donation sent via Bitpay is verified and accounted for on a publicly accessible block explorer.
Sonny Singh, Bitpay's Chief Commercial Officer, expressed his delight following the partnership. He said that Bitpay would keep on receiving more donations from the crypto community since Blockchain payments are slowly becoming a norm.
From this, it is clear that many people believe in crypto being the final agent of revolution in the mainstream money system, and rightly so, the world of philanthropy. Through it, benevolent crypto enthusiasts will conveniently fund projects across the planet. For now, though, those who would love to see the Tony Hawk Foundation do more good across the US and can do so by donating digital currencies.
