Turkish Cybercrime Department Apprehends 24 Crypto Scam Suspects In $2.47 Million Hack

Turkish Police Arrest 24 Suspects Of Hacking Crypto Company

The Turkish police force has recently arrested 24 people over their alleged involvement in stealing around $2.5 million USD from an unnamed crypto company in Turkey’s capital, Istanbul.

Daily Sabah, which reported on this story, has affirmed that the police’s Cyber Crime Department linked the money that was stolen from the company directly to the suspects as they have been using a popular online multiplayer game known as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) in order to communicate with each other.

The money was hacked right from the wallets of the company and major quantities of the three most valuable assets by market cap were taken: Bitcoin (BTC), Ripple’s XRP and Ethereum (ETH).

According to the reports, the police raided eight different Turkish provinces: Boly, Ankara, Bursa, Edirne, Antalya, Afyonkarahisar, Izmir and, obviously, Istanbul. At the moment, the police were able to get around $10,000 USD in cash and $246,000 USD worth in cryptos so far, which is only a small part of the money that was stolen.

From the 24 people who were arrested, only two people were released after the legal procedures and 22 suspects were sent to the courthouse. Six of the suspects were arrested in court and 16 were released temporarily while the case is still being investigated.

Hacking cases like this one are, unfortunately, very popular at the moment. Cryptopia, a crypto exchange from New Zealand, for instance, was hacked last month. The company has just started its operations again now.

These cases and SIM-swapping cases, in which the attacker steal the cryptos from the victims after cloning its SIM number, are also on the rise. It looks like you really have to protect your cryptos well these days.
