University of Nevada, Reno Creates Blockchain For Driverless Vehicles with Filament IoT Company
The University of Nevada, Reno has recently started a partnership with the Nevada Center of Applied Research (NCAR) and the Internet of Things (IoT) company Filament in order to jumpstart the Intelligent Mobility project, which is set to create a blockchain project that will help to develop an autonomous vehicle smart city project.
According to the official information from the press release, this new initiative will be based on the blockchain technology and its main goal is to improve the safety and communication between driverless cars which will be connected using the tech.
The director of NCAR, Carlos Cardillo, has affirmed that there is a growing number of vehicles which are connected on roads via the internet of things devices and that this could potentially create new vulnerabilities if the data was not protected. The idea of using the blockchain technology comes from protecting this data and using the ledger to expand the integrity standards of the project.
This technology, which is being developed by the three members of the partnership, will soon be launched for tests. According to the official press release, the Blocklet blockchain technology, which was created by Filament, will be used in order to power the connected machines and to link them with the distributed ledger that will make the whole system works.
With this integration of the technology, all the events will be recorded on the blockchain and transactions will be made in order to secure them. As it is usual with cases like this one, the blockchain will serve as a decentralized database in which the information will be easy to access by all the vehicles involved, which makes their operation more secure.
Allison Clift-Jennings, the CEO of Filament, has affirmed that only the Blocklet technology will be accepted and that the service that is being created by the university will not receive any transaction from the outside. This was a protective measure in order to avoid attacks on the network.
Driverless Cars Are The Future
Many companies around the world are slowly focusing their efforts on creating driverless cars and using the blockchain technology to manage them. IBM, for instance, is one of these companies. The tech giant has recently received a patent for self-driving cars.
The Hyundai Motor Group, the largest car manufacturer of South Korea, is also using the blockchain to connect electric vehicles with smartphones right now.
